Introduction

Nonsuch High School for Girls is a selective grammar school with academy status in the London Borough of Sutton, located at the edge of Nonsuch Park. The school holds specialisms in Science and Languages, which attracts additional funding for these programmes. The school has also been awarded multiple accolades including obtaining Beacon status, the Sportsmark Award, the Schools Achievement Award and Education Extra award at Distinction level. Ofsted school certified the school as ‘Good’ both overall and in all 5 categories. Extracurricular opportunities are plentiful, allowing girls to develop their interests, character and sense of community whether they enjoy music, sports, the arts, debating and the school even has its own observatory for astronomical study.

Academic Achievement

The latest statistics from 2019 (data gap due to coronavirus) show that Nonsuch High School for Girls helps girls to achieve very strong grades at GCSE at a level of achievement greater even than their strong starting points upon entry would indicate. Perhaps the two most indicative measurements of the high quality education at Nonsuch High School for Girls are the schools Progress 8 and Attainment 8 scores. Both metrics refer to the grades received in up to 8 of the girls best GCSE subjects from a series of ‘bins’ including English, Maths, 3 English Baccalaureate subjects (including Sciences, History, Geography, Languages) and any three other approved subjects. Attainment 8 adds the scores of childrens GCSE marks, applies a standardisation and averages these scores across a school. Nonsuch High School for Girls received an Attainment 8 score of 80.7 versus the national average 46.7 and the local average of 58.6. Progress 8 is more a metric of the school itself as it compares children who achieved similar Key Stage 2 results and asks how much progress they have made at a given school by the time they receive their GCSE results in Key Stage 4, compared to all other schools. Nonsuch High School for Girls has a Progress 8 score of 1.04 meaning that girls in attendance on average achieve one grade higher than the national expected progress for girls with their Key stage 2 starting point across these 8 GCSE’s. Nonsuch High School for Girls could therefore be said to have helped the girls exceed expectations.

Nonsuch High School for Girls Exam Format

Nonsuch High School for Girls operates a two stage selection process which together is referred to as the Entrance Test. Along with the other grammar schools in Sutton the first stage of this testing is the Selective Eligibility Test (SET) which contains multiple choice English and Maths questions. If your daughter passes this test they will be invited to sit the Nonsuch and Wallington Second Stage Entrance Examination (NWSSEE) which is sat by the two girls grammar schools in Sutton. This test again has English and Maths sections, but is not multiple choice in format. The results of both tests will form an aggregate score which is compared to the other students in your daughter’s year group to decide if she would be a good fit for a grammar education at Nonsuch High School for Girls. 11 Plus Hero is here to guide you through the specifics of both tests and provide your daughter with practice papers materials so that there are no surprises come the day of the test!

The Selective Eligibility Test (SET)

The English and Maths papers which make up the SET are expected to last between 40-50 minutes each with some inter year variation. Both will be sat on the same day with a short break in between. They feature a variety of multiple choice questions aimed at the level of the Key Stage 2 Curriculum with separate question and answer sheets.

Questions in Mathematics will be presented both as purely numerical equations and in text format, which will require candidates to interpret the mathematical operations to perform. The English paper features a short spelling section that students are advised to spend 5 minutes completing and a series of comprehension exercises requiring students to interpret provided passages of text and then compare between these passages.

Paper 1: Maths

Paper 2: English

Nonsuch and Wallington Second Stage Entrance Examination (NWSSEE)

Nonsuch High School for Girls shares its second stage selective test with the other nearby girls grammar school, Wallington High School for Girls. The Nonsuch and Wallington Second Stage Entrance Examination (NWSSEE) is again composed of English and Maths papers, this time featuring no multiple choice questions.

Mathematics questions are posed in full sentences, describing problems in which candidates must interpret what mathematical processes to carry out. The English paper provides the applicants with prompts to carry out continuous writing exercises. This is an opportunity for the girls to display the quality of their writing in terms of sentence structure, use of paragraphs, punctuation, vocabulary, spelling and descriptive language.

Pass Mark

The Selective Eligibility Test (SET) Pass Criteria:

In the week following the SET parent will receive an email with their child’s results. The threshold pass mark for the SET changes on a yearly basis as it is partially dependent on how well the year group taking the test performed. As such it is difficult to quote an exact number and indeed each individual grammar school in Sutton can decide upon their own minimum threshold for the shared test. It is however expected that the top 25-30% of children will pass the SET and be invited back to take the NWSSEE. For more information please see our article ‘Selective Tests in Sutton’.

The Nonsuch and Wallington Second Stage Entrance Examination (NWSSEE) Pass Criteria:

As with the SET the passing threshold and minimum acceptable standard for each paper of the NWSSEE is decided upon on a yearly basis. The girls will receive a combined Entrance Test score consisting of marks from the SET and NWSSEE. To be eligible for admission it is required that girls pass both the SET and NWSSEE whilst also receiving a minimum acceptable standard in each of the NWSSEE papers. For example a high score in the NWSSEE maths paper cannot compensate for an unsatisfactory score in the NWSSEE English paper. The overall aggregate score of an applicant is calculated by adding half their scores from the SET to their score from the NWSSEE papers. The scores will also be standardised with an adjustment for the age of students so as not to disadvantage younger pupils. This gives a child’s final Entrance Test score. Important to note is that Nonsuch High School for Girls operates superselective admissions meaning that those girls who scored the highest in the combined Entrance Test, consisting of marks from the SET and NWSSEE, will be granted admission with priority.

Nonsuch High School for Girls FAQs

There is no constant passing threshold for either the SET or NWSSEE assessments. This is because the thresholds are determined every year impart by statistical analysis of all the results achieved by the children taking the test that year. Further details and explanation of how your daughter’s score is calculated can be found in the above section Pass Mark.

Nonsuch High School for Girls has two tests as part of its combined Entrance Test procedure. The Selective entrance Test (SET) is sat by all grammar school applicants in Sutton. Passing this means that girls will be invited back to take the Nonsuch and Wallington Second Stage Entrance Examination (NWSSEE). Both test involve papers in English and maths. For more details on the content specifics please see the sbove section – Nonsuch High School for Girls Exam Format.

The NWSSEE is an entirely written, rather than multiple choice, assessment that is marked by education professionals requiring school resources. This style of assessment lets Nonsuch High School for Girls specifically test the boundaries of a child’s education that they deem most important. The SET is a multiple choice paper which enables it to be marked rapidly by a computer and can be though of as a panning stage to select those most promising students for invitation to the second stage.
