Introduction

King Edward VI School is a selective academy for boys in Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire. King Edward VI School has existed since 1295 and was re-founded by King Edward VI, its primary claim to fame is that William Shakespeare attended the school in the 1570s, as such it is commonly referred to as Shakespeare’s school. In December of 2021 Ofsted inspected King Edwards VI School and found that it was “Outstanding” in every key category. Ofsted reported that the school has a rich and vibrant community, where pupils thrive with exemplary behaviour and enthusiasm. There is a wide variety of extracurricular activities and almost every pupil attends at least one. The school teaching goes far beyond the normal curriculum, and as such even when students are taking GCSEs their teaching is not limited. The teachers are knowledgeable, knowing both their subjects and students through and through, they can tailor learning so as to get the most out of every student.

In 2019 King Edward VI School performed exceptionally academically with 100% of their GCSE students achieving a 5+ in Maths and English, the local average was 50%. 92% of students entered the EBacc, and scored an average of 7.73, 3.4 points higher than the local average and 3.7 points above the national average. The Attainment 8 score was 78.7, with the national average being 46.7. The Progress 8 score was “Well above average” with a score of 0.66.

With such a prestigious and high achieving school it is no wonder that entry exams are required.
