Introduction
Barton Court Grammar School is a mixed, selective academy in Canterbury, Kent. At Baton Court Grammar School they believe that everyone learns best when they are happy and valued. As such the core values of Barton Court Grammar School are centred around creating an atmosphere where students can thrive, they try and provide ample opportunity for necessary enrichment. Staff try to provide the most enjoyable experience that can be had when learning. The 2020 visit from Ofstead produced a “Good” result. Ofsted reported that the school was “Outstanding” in behaviour and attitudes, personal development, and leadership and management, however only achieved a “Good” in the quality of education provided and the Sixth-form provision.
In 2019 Barton County Grammar School achieved an “Average” Progress 8 score of 0.09. The Attainment 8 score was 62.9, compared to the local and national averages of 47.3 and 46.7. 87% of the students taking the GCSE exams that year achieved a 5+ in Maths and English.
As with most selective academies, Barton Court Grammar School has a high level of competition for places. They are oversubscribed every year and so it gets more difficult to get a place. Barton Court Grammar Exam Format
Barton Court Grammar School selects students using the GL 11 Plus Kent Test common and compulsory to Grammar schools under the Kent County Council authority.
The GL 11 Plus Kent Test: Overview
We here present an overview of the three components which make up the GL 11 Plus Kent Test which is required for admission to Grammar Schools in Kent. The test is composed of two multiple choice papers set by the GL 11 Plus exam board. One is in English and Maths, the other in Verbal Reasoning and Non-verbal reasoning. In addittion there is an extended creative writing excersice set by the school itself and reviewed only at the appeal stage following receipt of an unsuccesful Kent Test score from the papers. Applicants will receive grades for papers one and two of the Kent Test and an overall aggregate score. These results are statistically standardised to compare any one child’s score to the average score of their school year. As such there is no ‘passing grade’ as these boundaries change but the school estimates the top 25% of students in the country will receive a passing grade.
