Introduction

Chelmsford County High is a selective school for girls based in Chelmsford, Essex. It is one of the oldest girls schools in Essex, established in 1907, and sits just outside the city centre. County High has an ambition to be a ‘progressive’ grammar school, committed to not only the girls’ education, but their empowerment.

Chelmsford County High is not without an outstandingly consistent output of results, in both GCSE and A-Level examinations. In the 2019 academic year, 99% of students sitting their GCSEs achieved at least a grade 5 in English and Maths (equivalent to a C-A* under the previous GCSE marking criteria). Further, 84.2% of the grades achieved were 9-7 (A*-A). These high results are replicated through the 2020 and 2021 academic years, and hope to be in 2022. Adjoining, Chelmsford County High School boasts a ‘dynamic, vibrant and purposeful’ Sixth Form, with equally impressive A-Level results. In 2019, the Year 13 students produced a 100% pass rate, with 84.1% of all grades as A*-B.

As a result, admission to Chelmsford County High School is a competitive and gruelling process. The girls’ school selects students based on their performance in the CCHS 11+ exam, governed by the CEM exam board, designed for admission to Chelmsford County High. The 11+ is a multiple choice test under the CEM exam board; it assesses a candidate’s competency in Verbal Reasoning (including vocabulary and reading comprehension), Non-Verbal Reasoning and Numerical Reasoning. It is made up of two papers, each with a mix of the aforementioned elements. The assessment is designed to push a candidate beyond the ordinary realms of primary education. Our resources with 11 Plus Hero help prepare your child for this CEM 11+, providing them with a toolkit to have the best chance to succeed for admission into Chelmsford County School For Girls. We also provide information to help guide yourself and your child through the admissions process, so that you and your child can confidently and competently apply to your chosen schools.

The CCHS 11+ Entrance Test Format

The 11+ used by Chelmsford County High School For Girls is a multiple choice assessment under the CEM exam board. Registration for the test is done via the CCHS website at  https://www.cchs.co.uk/admission-to-year-7-september-2023/ . The 11+ exam assesses a candidate’s competence in Numerical Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning; the Verbal Reasoning section of the assessment may contain reading comprehension similar to other 11+ English sections, but there is no dedicated English section. The content of the assessment pushes a candidate beyond what is taught at primary education level; the test is designed with difficult formatting and challenging questions. The unfamiliar format and its difficulty can seem daunting; for this reason, 11+ Hero is here to help. We understand and are accustomed to the content of the CCHS 11+ Entrance Test and the CEM exam board, the question methodology and how to score marks highly. We can provide a toolkit to your child, familiarising them with the test format and ensuring they have the best chance to succeed.

Pass Mark

Test scores are received in mid-October of the preceding year of entry; for example, for entry in 2023, test scores will be received by mid-October 2022. It is notable that the CEM exam board for the Chelmsford County High School test uses a method of standardised marking, meaning that younger children are not penalised for their age, the results are statistically standardised to compare any child’s score average to the average score of their school year. Notably, there is no official ‘pass mark’ for the CCHS test. Instead, children are split into ‘bands’ based on their aggregate test score; children scoring within the top and middle bands are prioritised within the oversubscription criteria. Parents will be informed which ‘band’ their child falls into when results are posted. This is the current method of selection, as contained in the school’s 2023 admission policy https://www/cchs.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/Admissions-Policy-for-Entry-in-2023-Determined-17-Dec-21-1.pdf – but is subject to change. Catchment Area

It is not required for prospective students to live in a designated catchment area. However, the school does use ‘Priority Areas’ in their oversubscription criteria, meaning that children living close to the school are more likely to get an offer of place. The priority area is the area with a 12.5 mile radius (measured in a straight line) of the school. Distances are to three decimal places in the first instance.

Additional Eligibility

For admission to Chelmsford County High School For Girls, where the number of eligible pupils exceeds the number of places available, the school uses the following set of oversubscription criteria to make offers, prioritised in the order listed:

  • The applicant is a Looked After or Previously Looked After Child* who has received a score within the top or middle bands as advised in the CCHS Entrance Test result letter posted to parents;
  1. Of the next 144 places, they will be allocated as follows:

Up to 30 places will be made available to applicants in receipt of the pupil premium**, who have achieved a score within the top or middle bands as advised in the CCHS Entrance test result letter posted to parents and live at a permanent home address within the 12.5 mile priority area. The offer of a place is conditional upon the applicant being continuously resident within the priority area between 1st September of Year 6 and the start of Year 7 at CCHS;
    2. The remaining places (of the 144) will be allocated to applicants living at a permanent home address within the 12.5 mile priority area of the school. The offer of a place is conditional upon the applicant being continuously resident within the priority area between 1st September of Year 6 and the start of Year 7 at CCHA;
  2. All remaining places (Up to 36) will be allocated in descending order from the Ranked List of Applicants irrespective of where they permanently live until all 180 places are filled.
