Introduction
King Edward VI Grammar School is a selective boys school serving Chelmsford and its surrounding area. It is one of the most prestigious schools in Essex, providing a specialist education to gifted young men. The school is not without a consistently high output of academic results. Despite this, the school boasts a broad curriculum with a focus on developing students as well-rounded individuals.
Further, following the 2019 GCSE examinations, 100% of students at KEGS achieved at least a grade 5 in English and Maths (C-A* under the previous marking criteria). In that academic year, over 95% of students achieved grades 9-6 (A*-B) across all subjects, with 68.3% of all grades at 8-9 (high A*-low A*). Many of these students progress to sit their A-Level examinations with KEGS adjoining Sixth Form, an outstanding institute for KS5 education. In the 2022 academic year, over 93% of students achieved A*-B grades, with over 44% of all grades at A*. The results speak for themselves, indicative of outstanding progression not only from KS2-KS4, but from GCSE to A-Level also.
Undoubtedly, KEGS is an extremely popular choice for prospective students and their parents. The school is heavily oversubscribed, meaning that good performance in the school’s selective test is vital for admission. The boys’ school selects students based on their performance in the CSSE 11+ Examination. This is the Consortium of Selective Schools in Essex. It is a multiple choice test, made up of two papers. One testing in English and one in Mathematics. Each paper is designed to test a candidate beyond their ordinary primary education, with both formatting and question difficulty. Our resources with 11 Plus Hero help prepare your child for the CSSE 11+, providing them with a toolkit to have the best chance to succeed for admission into KEGS. We also provide information to help guide yourself and your child through the admissions process, so that you and your child can confidently and competently apply to your chosen schools.

The CSSE 11+ Entrance Test Format
The method of selective testing used by KEGS is the CSSE 11+, used by the Essex Consortium of Grammar Schools. The assessment consists of two papers: English and Maths, made up of both multiple choice and open answer questions. The English test includes reading comprehension, vocabulary questions, literacy questions and creative writing, while the Maths questions test students on content similar to what they will have learnt at KS2, but pushing them a little further. The test is designed with difficult formatting and challenging questions. The unfamiliar format and its difficulty can seem daunting; for this reason, 11+ Hero is here to help. We understand and are accustomed to the content of the CSSE 11+ Entrance, the question methodology and how to score marks highly. We can provide a toolkit to your child, familiarising them with the test format and ensuring they have the best chance to succeed.

Pass Mark
Test scores are received in mid-October of the preceding year of entry; for example, for entry in 2023, test scores will be received by mid-October 2022. The scores are also ‘weighted’, meaning children are given different results depending on their age, so they are not penalised for it. There is no official pass mark for KEGS, but historical data shows that most schools in the CSSE consortium do not admit children with an aggregate score less than 303 in the tests. Instead, where applications for admission exceed the number of places available in Year 7 (150), places are awarded in rank order from the test, using the standardised scores awarded from the CSSE 11+.

Catchment Area
It is not required for prospective students to live in a designated catchment area. However, the school does use ‘Priority Areas’ in their oversubscription criteria, meaning that children living close to the school are more likely to get an offer of place. The priority area is the area with a 12.5 mile radius (measured in a straight line) of the school. The candidate must be resident at this address from 1st September at the start of Year 6.
Additional Eligibility
For admission to KEGS, where the number of eligible pupils exceeds the number of places available, places are awarded based on the rank order from the test, using standardised scores:
- First, 120 places are reserved to students continuously living in the ‘Priority Area’.
-
- Up to 8 out of the 120 places are reserved to boys in this category who meet the following criteria:
- At the time of registration are either in receipt of the Pupil Premium* grant or are Looked After or Previously Looked After Children** (must be declared on school registration form); AND
- Achieved a final standardised score of at least 340
- Up to 8 out of the 120 places are reserved to boys in this category who meet the following criteria:
- Further places will be offered in descending rank order of marks to the boys up until 120 places have been awarded to priority area applicants;
- Once 120 places have been awarded, the remaining 30 places will be allocated to boys regardless of where they live
- Up to 2 of these 30 places are available to the top performing boys in the selection test who meet the following criteria:
- At the time of registration, are either in receipt of the Pupil Premium or are Looked After or Previously Looked After children (must be stated on the school registration form); AND
- Achieved a standardised score of at least 368 on the CSSE 11+.
- The remaining places from the 30 will then be offered in descending rank order of marks to the boys scoring highest in the selection test
King Edward VI Grammar School FAQs
- There is no official or set ‘pass mark’ for entry to KEGS. Instead, priority for admission is based on a candidates standardised score in the CSSE 11+. Although there is no official pass mark, this means that the higher a child’s score, the more likely they are to be offered a place at KEGS.
