Introduction
Bournemouth School is a selective boys’ academy based in Bournemouth, with students from the town itself and the surrounding area. They carry a status of ‘outstanding’, following their previous Ofsted inspection, proving a stimulating academic environment, evidenced by a set of consistently high exam results.
To expand, in the 2019, 2020 and 2021 academic year, 97% (or more) of students at the school or more attained grades 5-9 in Maths and English (equivalent to C-A* grades under the previous GCSE marking criteria). This is significantly higher than the local authority average of 51% and the national average of 43%. Further, in 2019, 99% of students stayed in full-time education or entered into employment. Of that 99%, many students attending Bournemouth School enter into Further Education with the school’s adjoining Sixth Form, equally successful academically. In the 2022 academic year, 86% of all grades achieved were A*-C, with 49% of all grades at A*-A. The aforementioned grades evidence that students’ academic progression from primary school is proliferated by a grammar school education at Bournemouth School.
As a result, admission to Bournemouth School is highly competitive, with the school constantly oversubscribed and only a limited number of places. The boys’ school selects students based on their performance in the GL 11+ designed for admission to the Bournemouth Consortium of Grammar Schools. This consortium of schools includes Bournemouth School, Bournemouth School For Girls, Parkstone Grammar School and Poole Grammar School. This selective test is a GL 11+, under the GL exam board. The assessment consists of three multiple choice exam papers, each testing a child’s competence in a different subject: English, Maths and Verbal Reasoning. Catchment Area
Bournemouth School operates on a “Priority Admission” area, used in their oversubscription criteria. Please note this is subject to change. The Priority Admission area is contained in their 2023 Admissions policy; this method of prioritisation ensures that education is provided for pupils who are mainly drawn from the area in which the school is situated.
The Priority Area is defined as:

Additional Eligibility
Where the number of eligible pupils reaching the required standard in the 11+ entrance examination exceeds the number of places available, the school uses the following set of oversubscription criteria in conjunction with the Priority Areas to make offers; places will be allocated in the following order of priority:
- Eligible boys who are Looked After children or Previously Looked After Children;
- those who are eligible for the Pupil Premium** will be ranked next, in order of entrance test score, those with the highest scores being given the most priority;
- Those who live in the priority area, in order of entrance test scores;
- Eligible boys who are sons of members of staff where the member of staff has been employed at the school for two or more years at the time when the application for admission to the school was made;
- The remaining eligible boys will be ranked in order of the entrance test scores, with those boys obtaining the highest scores given higher priority.
*Looked After or Previously Looked After children are those who have been in local authority care or previously have been in local authority care
**Children who qualify for the Pupil Premium grant are those who are in receipt of Free School Meals as of 31st October of the preceding year of entry, or are children of the UK Armed Forces at any point in the 6 years prior to 31st October of the preceding year of entry
