Introduction

Poole Grammar School is a selective school for boys based in Poole, Bournemouth. Awarded academy status in 2011, the school prides itself on a rich academic culture, stretching into every student’s individuality. The school allows for a breadth of opportunity, academically and on an extracurricular basis. Further, the school boasts a great investment in facilities, including two astroturf tennis courts, with a further grant to build new sporting facilities.

The school’s “progress 8” score is well above average, meaning that from KS2 to KS4, pupils make a significant amount of progress compared to others in the local authority and nationally. Further, 93% of pupils, in 2019, achieved at least a grade 5 in English and Maths at GCSE level. Comparatively, a lot higher than the local authority average or 51% and the national average of 43%. The adjoining Sixth Form to Poole Grammar School is equally academic, consistently performing in the top 25% of schools and colleges in England for A-Level performance. From 2018-2022, the school has achieved at least a 99% pass rate, with over 70% of grades at A*-B. The grades speak for themselves, the school has a consistently high output of results and students progress well in both the secondary school and Sixth Form.

Undoubtedly, admission to Poole Grammar School is competitive, with only a limited number of places. The boys’ school selects students based on their performance in the GL 11+ designed for admission to the Bournemouth Consortium of Grammar Schools. This consortium of schools includes Bournemouth School, Bournemouth School For Girls, Parkstone Grammar School and Poole Grammar School. This selective test is a GL 11+, under the GL exam board. The assessment consists of three multiple choice exam papers, each testing a child’s competence in a different subject: English, Maths and Verbal Reasoning. The assessment is designed to push a candidate beyond the ordinary realms of primary education. Our resources with 11 Plus Hero help prepare your child for this GL 11+, providing them with a toolkit to have the best chance to succeed for admission into Poole Grammar School. We also provide information to help guide yourself and your child through the admissions process, so that you and your child can confidently and competently apply to your chosen schools.

The Bournemouth Consortium 11+ Format

All 4 schools in the Bournemouth consortium of Grammar Schools, Poole Grammar School inclusive, select students based on their performance in the Bournemouth Schools 11+ Exam, under the GL Exam Board. Registration for the test is done via every individual school. If you wish to register your child for the test for entry to Poole Grammar School, it must be done via their registration form; this can be found on the website of Bournemouth School. The 11+ exam is a multiple choice assessment divided into 3 papers, each paper testing a child in a different subject area: Maths, English and Verbal Reasoning. The content of the assessment is beyond what is taught at primary education level; the test is designed to push candidates with the question difficulty and formatting. The unfamiliar format of the test and its difficulty can seem daunting. The 11 Plus Hero is here to help. We understand and are accustomed to the content of the Slough 11+ test and the GL exam board, including their methodology and method of marking. We can provide a toolkit to your child, familiarising them with the test format and ensuring they have the best chance to succeed.

Pass Mark

The pass mark for admission to Poole Grammar School is subject to change every year. According to the school’s 2023 admissions policy, the pass mark will be issued to parents, along with their child’s actual mark on results day in October of the preceding year of entry. For entry in 2023, test scores will be received by mid-October 2022. It is notable that the Bournemouth consortium uses a method of standardised marking, meaning that younger children are not penalised for their age, the results are statistically standardised to compare any child’s score average to the average score of their school year. Boys’ scores will be assessed as to whether they meet the ‘required standard’ and are therefore eligible for admission to the Bournemouth grammar schools. What the required standard is cannot be predicted and is subject to change each year. But, it is estimated that the top 25% of students will meet this and it is likely there will be more eligible students than places. For more information please see our article ‘Selective Test in Bournemouth – GL 11 Plus”
