Introduction

Colyton is a co-educational, selective grammar school in the village of Colyford in East Devon. It is the only grammar school in East Devon, and serves Colyford and the surrounding area. As a grammar school, academic and high exam results are at the heart of its values, but that is not without building a well-rounded education, building strong characters and enthusiasm to set up children for the working world; this is upheld and represented by the school’s ‘vision and values’.

As evidenced by historical data, students at Colyton Grammar School consistently perform highly in both GCSE and A-Level examinations. In the 2019 year, 100% of all students achieved at least a grade 5 in Maths and English, with 86% of grades across the board marked at 7-9 (A-A*). Colyton Grammar School is exceptionally academic. Many of their students continue to Colyton’s adjoining Sixth Form, an establishment equally renowned for producing such exceptional results. The Sixth Form offers a breadth of subjects, with many leavers continuing their education at Oxbridge or various Russell Groups. The students sitting the 2022 A-Level examinations achieved a 100% pass rate, with 92% of grades across the board at A*-B, with 16 to attend Oxbridge and one to Harvard University.

The school provides a stimulating educational environment for attendees, leading to those students achieving excellent results at both GCSE and A-Level. For this reason, admission to Colyton Grammar School is difficult as the school is very popular for prospective students and parents, being heavily oversubscribed. The co-educational school selects students based on their performance in its method of selective testing, an 11+ examination under the CEM exam board. This CEM 11+ assesses a candidate’s competency in Numerical Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning and Non-verbal Reasoning. The 11+ is designed to push candidates beyond their Key Stage 2 education. Our resources with 11 Plus Hero help prepare your child for this CEM 11+, providing them with a toolkit to have the best chance to succeed. We also provide information to help guide yourself and your child through the admissions process, so that you and your child can confidently and competently apply to your chosen schools.

Colyton Grammar School 11+ Format

Colyton Grammar School assesses students using a CEM exam board test. This 11+ exam assesses  a candidate’s competence in Numerical Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal reasoning; the Verbal Reasoning section of the assessment may contain reading comprehension similar to other 11+ English sections, but there is no dedicated English section. The exam is administered and marked by the CEM exam board, scores are age-standardised to produce a final score, the number of correct answers vary according to a child’s age. The content of the assessment tests beyond what is taught at primary education level; the test is designed to push candidates with the question difficulty and formatting. The unfamiliar format of the test and its difficulty can seem daunting. The 11 Plus Hero is here to help. We understand and are accustomed to the content of Colyton’s 11+ test and the CEM exam board, including their methodology and method of marking. We can provide a toolkit to your child, familiarising them with the test format and ensuring they have the best chance to succeed.

Pass Mark

Test scores are received in mid-October of the preceding year of entry; for example for entry in 2023, test scores will be received by mid-October 2022. It is notable that the CEM exam board uses a method of standardised marking, meaning that younger children are not penalised for their age, the results are statistically standardised to compare any child’s score average to the average score of their school year. In the school’s admission policy, they do not indicate a specific figure which is a ‘pass mark’. Instead, the standardised scores achieved by the children will be ranked, and an ‘eligible score’  will be found based on the quality of all the candidates’ scores that year – the eligible score is subject to change. If a child receives an ‘eligible score’, it means they can be considered for entry to the school; parents will be informed as to whether a child has achieved an ‘eligible score’ when results are received in October of the preceding year of entry. Notably, a mere achievement of the ‘eligible score’ does not guarantee a child an offer to Colyton Grammar School; this is clearly outlined in the school’s admissions policy. For this reason, the ‘eligible score’ cannot be predicted for every year, but it is estimated that the top 25% of students will achieve the qualifying mark. Additional Eligibility

In the event of a tied ranking for the last available place at the school, proximity to the school will be used as a tie break. This is the only time where proximity feeds into the oversubscription criteria; otherwise, catchment areas and distance are not used.

Further, children with EHC plans are admitted via separate statutory procedures. This is contained in Colyton Grammar School’s 2023 Admissions Policy. Where children with an EHC plan qualify for the school for entry in year 7, they will be admitted before the allocation of other candidates, before any oversubscription criteria is implemented.

For a full and detailed breakdown of Colyton’s admissions criteria, and to understand whether your child is likely to be admitted, please visit the school’s 2023 Admission policy in the relevant hyperlink above.

As outlined above, children must reach the ‘eligible score’ (which is subject to change) for admission consideration to Colyton Grammar School.

The school is popular and children reaching this ‘eligible score’ are not always admitted. In selecting students to make school offers to, the school prioritises children in the oversubscription criteria listed below:

  1. Looked After Children and Previously Looked After Children;
  2. Children on the eligible list who attract the Pupil Premium, are eligible for Free School Meals or have been at any point in the last six years or children whose parent/guardians are serving in the UK armed forces;
  3. Rank order based on the total score achieved in the tests of children on the eligible list
