Introduction

Ermysted’s Grammar School is a voluntary-aided, selective grammar school for boys aged 11-18, located in Skipton, North Yorkshire. It was founded over 500 years ago by Peter Toller and is one of the oldest schools in England. The school operates a house system and throughout each term the houses participate in a range of activities and competitions. Ermsyted’s motto is ‘Suivez La Raison’, meaning ‘Follow the Truth’ in French, and current Headmaster Michael Evans is keen to promote the school’s aim of developing a child’s character and confidence alongside academic success.

The school has a reputation of being one of the best in the area when it comes to GCSE and A level results, achieving close to 100% five A*- C (level 9-4 in the new grading system) GCSE grades every year. In 2019, students scored well above the national average, with over 95% achieving grade 5 or above in English and Maths GCSEs and 99% staying in education or progressing into employment. Of the 112 A-level students, over 30% achieved AAB or higher compared to the national average of approximately 16%, and over 90% students moved to higher education or employment. The school has not published progress results for 2020 or 2021.

Ermysted's Grammar Exam Format

Ermysted’s Grammar School uses GL 11 Plus for the selection test, though the format was changed for recent intakes. Dual papers were introduced for the 2020 test, with one containing English and Verbal Reasoning and the other containing Maths and Non-Verbal Reasoning.

As this change is relatively new, and only three cohorts have sat these papers, it is challenging to find familiarisation materials which accurately follow the format of these papers. Spatial reasoning has not been included in the second paper for the previous candidates, but it is encouraged that your child is familiar with the question types. Practising with the relevant GL 11 Plus style exam materials will help your child to prepare effectively for the Ermysted’s test, and 11 Plus Hero is here to help!

Test Overview

Paper One: A 50-minute multiple choice English and Verbal Reasoning paper

Pass Mark

A child must achieve the ‘required standard’. Ermysted’s defines this as “the score achieved by the 140th candidate when the scores of all candidates in the main Entrance Test cohort are placed in descending rank order” (EGS, 2022).

Catchment Area

Priority is given to applicants who have passed the selection test and live closest to the school. The marks achieved each year help to determine the catchment area, so the exact locations may change depending on the scores achieved by those living in close proximity to the school.

From previous years, locations that have consistently been within the catchment area for Ermysted’s include: Beamsley, Bradley, Burnsall, Carleton, Cracoe, Crosshills, Embsay, Gargrave, Grassington, Kettlewell, Kirkby-in-Malhamdale, Skipton, Sutton-in-Craven, Thornton-in-Craven and Threshfield.

Additional Eligibility

Ermysted’s operates priority eligibility under the oversubscription criteria for candidates who qualify for Pupil Premium (who can access additional familiarisation support), those with a brother at the school already, children looked after by the local authority and those who live within the catchment area.

Generally, in the event of oversubscription from these areas, the school will use the following criteria:

  1. Priority is given to boys who are currently, or were previously, looked after by the local authority.
  2. Secondly, boys who have a permanent primary residence within the catchment area.
  3. Thirdly to children from any other area.

Ermysted’s Grammar School FAQs

The pass mark is the score achieved by the 140th child when the scores of all candidates in the main entrance exam cohort are placed in descending rank order. Therefore, the pass mark changes every year and is determined by how well all the children do.

Ermysted’s sets their own exam format with papers provided by GL Assessment. The contents include English and Verbal Reasoning as well as Maths and Non-Verbal Reasoning.

Ensure your child brings their registration letter, completed registration card and any additional paperwork.

Any coats/bags should be labelled in advance as these cannot be left at the child’s desk during the test.

Please check with the school if any medicine needs to be administered on school property.

Children do not need to bring their own stationery as this is provided.

A drink of water and a snack will be provided by the school for the break in between the papers. If your child has any dietary requirements or allergies then they can bring their own snack securely packed in a labelled clear bag.

Digital watches, timers, electronic aids and calculators should not be taken to the exam. If found, these will be removed and safely stored for the duration of the test.

A mobile phone must not be taken into the exam room as this can result in disqualification.

Presently, parents are not able to stay within the buildings on-site and it is encouraged that you do not walk around the areas designated for usage on the day.

You must contact the Admissions Officer with a valid reason for the absence. If this is not provided before the deadline, your child will be withdrawn from the selection test.

Currently, there are no Ermysted’s 11 plus practice papers that are applicable to this specific exam.

GL Assessment provides free familiarisation material:

Please note that these materials are not definitive and there is no guarantee that these question types will be found in the actual exam.

It is important to not start too early with full-length 11 plus papers as the difficulty level may be too high and it can be discouraging if the child does not perform as well as they hoped.

It may be acceptable to use pre–11 plus papers aimed at younger children to get used to certain techniques, the multiple-choice answer sheet and timings.

Generally, it is encouraged to hold off until the summer unless the child feels prepared and wants to try a paper. You may decide not to set their first tests under timed conditions and allow the child the chance to work through every question, even if this goes over the recommended time for the paper.

It is not necessarily advantageous, but it does help if a child is thriving in their school subjects and motivated to learn and study. Strong core skills are essential and should be checked regardless of how well the child performs at school.
