Introduction

Skipton Girls’ High School is a selective academy for girls aged 11-18, specialising in Engineering and STEM. The academy is a founder school of Northern Star Academies Trust, a not-for-profit charity dedicated to improving the quality of education provision for all. It is located in Skipton, North Yorkshire, voted one of the best places to live in the UK. Ofsted has classed the school as ‘Outstanding’ twice in succession, and Headteacher Mark Turner strives to offer students a world class academic experience free from gender stereotypes.

Skipton Girls’ has an excellent reputation with GCSE and A level results, consistently achieving close to 100% A* – C in GCSE English and Maths. Students performed strongly in 2019, with 90% achieving over grade 5 (high C/low B) in their GCSEs and an A-level average level score of 40.89. Results show that almost 100% of students completed their studies.

Catchment Area

Priority is given to applicants who have passed the selection test and live closest to the school. In previous years, candidates living in the designated priority area who reached the required standard across the three papers have been offered a place.

Skipton Girls’ provides a current map of school priority area in Appendix 2 in their Admissions Booklet.

Additional Eligibility

Candidates who meet the required standard and have a current Education, Health Care Plan which names Skipton Girls’ will be offered a place. This reduces the number of places available for the year.

Generally, in the event of oversubscription from these areas, the school will use the following criteria:

  1. Priority is given to girls who are currently, or were previously, looked after by the local authority and are classed as suitable.
  2. Girls who are registered as Pupil Premium and have been eligible for Free School Meals at any point in the last 6 years to present.
  3. Girls who have a permanent primary residence within the catchment area and deemed suitable.
  4. Girls from any other area who are deemed suitable.

Skipton Girls’ High School FAQs

GL Assessment prepares the papers in English, Maths and Verbal Reasoning. All three papers are multiple-choice, and each test result is recorded as a standardised score.

Ensure your child brings their personal registration card and any additional paperwork.

Any coats/bags should be labelled in advance as these cannot be left at the child’s desk during the test.

Please check with the school if any medicine needs to be administered on school property.

If your child is ill on the day of the test, you must contact the school on 01756 707600 before 9.15am to inform them of the absence.

A medical certificate or doctor’s letter will need to be obtained and a copy sent to the school by 4pm on Wednesday 28th September 2022 so new arrangements can be made. If this evidence is not provided before the deadline, your child will be withdrawn from the selection test.

GL Assessment have produced practice materials suitable for the Skipton Girls’ exam. The most appropriate packs are listed in the Skipton Girls’ Admissions Booklet in Section 3.

It is important to not start too early with full-length 11 plus papers as the difficulty level may be too high and it can be discouraging if the child does not perform as well as they hoped.

It may be acceptable to use pre–11 plus papers aimed at younger children to get used to certain techniques, the multiple-choice answer sheet and timings.

Generally, it is encouraged to hold off until the summer unless the child feels prepared and wants to try a paper. You may decide not to set their first tests under timed conditions and allow the child the chance to work through every question, even if this goes over the recommended time for the paper.
