Introduction
Lancaster Royal Grammar School (LRGS) is a boys’ day and boarding state school with academy status (2011) and a co-educational Sixth Form. It is one of the oldest schools in the country, endowed in 1472. Following a recent Ofsted visit in 2021, the school was noted to have outstanding effectiveness in behaviour and attitudes, personal development and Sixth Form provision, which in recent years expanded to accept Sixth Form girls. Enriching sporting and social activities contributed to the positive feedback from Ofsted, LRGS staff and students.
School performance and attendance is above average, and as a selective mixed grammar school with boarding facilities and a Sixth Form, competition for entry is strong. Exam results in 2022 included record-breaking A-Level achievements, with 62.9% of grades an A* or A, and over three-quarters of students achieved B and higher. Further Mathematics, in particular, received exceptional results, with all 18 A-Level entries scoring B and above. At GCSE, this success continued, with 96.7% at grades 9-7 for Further Mathematics, and Latin close behind with 88.9%. There was almost a 100% pass rate across all grades for GCSEs.
