Introduction

Heckmondwike Grammar School is a co-educational grammar school and sixth form college managed by Kirklees Council. In 2010, the school gained academy status and the latest Ofsted report in 2022 rated the school’s overall effectiveness as Good with Outstanding behaviour and attitudes. Heckmondwike is proud of its strong reputation in the local area for consistent exam results and engaging extra-curricular activities. The Headteacher, staff, pupils and governors work together to uphold the school motto ‘Nil Sine Labore’ meaning ‘nothing without work’, encouraging a positive academic environment where performance reaches the highest standard possible.

The school boasts strong performance in GCSEs; in 2019, three out of four grades were awarded at grade 7 or above with over a third of these students achieving grade 9. An impressive 79% of students secured five or more GCSEs at grade 9-7 and 63% of Year 11 students gained eight or more GCSEs at the same grade. In total, 78 students were recorded as achieving ten or more 9-7 grades.

Heckmondwike Grammar School Exam Format

Heckmondwike Grammar School’s exam is set by the Centre for Evaluation & Monitoring (CEM) exam board. To enter your child for this exam, you must register them on the Local Authority website before the closing date and complete a Supplementary Information Form located on the school’s website.

The Heckmondwike CEM 11 Plus test has a strong focus on reasoning ability, therefore it is important to prepare effectively in these areas. 11 Plus Hero is here to help with advice and resources available to put your child in good stead for achieving success.

The CEM Test: Overview

The CEM papers were developed by the Centre for Education and Monitoring at the University of Durham and are now produced by Cambridge University Press. CEM is one of the most popular 11 plus exam boards opposite GL, though the question types and formats are recognised as more unexpected than the papers prepared by the latter.

In the Familiarisation Guide produced by CEM, the questions fall under four categories: Comprehension, Maths, Pictures (Non-Verbal Reasoning) and Word Choice. The test booklets are accompanied by multiple choice answer sheets.
