Introduction

Kendrick School in Reading is a selective 11-18 girls’ school with academy status. The school is continuing to expand until September 2024, when there will be 32 students in each of the four forms in Years 7-11. Kendrick School strongly promotes the values of equality, tolerance and justice, and the students are expected to actively make a difference to their own lives and others. Headteacher Ms. Kattirtzi is passionate about the school offering the best possible education and has the resolve and vision to “lead, inspire and make a difference to the lives of girls and young women.”

Kendrick School is known locally and nationally as an outstanding school, supported by an excellent Progress 8 score of 1.29 in 2019, which is “well above average”. 100% of students achieved a 5+ in GCSE English and Maths, and all students who finished Key Stage 4 either stayed on in education or started employment. Kendrick School’s Attainment 8 score (84.7) far exceeded the national average (50.5).

Admission to Kendrick School involves a common admissions test provided by CEM. Kendrick School is part of a group of Grammar Schools taking the test on the same day. These schools are Herschel Grammar School, Langley Grammar School, St Bernard’s Catholic Grammar School and Upton Court. Additionally, there are other schools in the wider geographical area who use the same test. The aim of 11 Plus Hero is to share our knowledge of 11 plus schools across the country, covering entrance exam question styles and formats in our practice papers, so that you know all the important information and can make the right choices when preparing for the Kendrick School 11 plus exam.

Kendrick School Exam Format

The Kendrick School 11 plus exam uses the same format as the CEM test used by the Slough Consortium. The two papers are designed to assess Numerical Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning skills, though the Verbal Reasoning section may also include a reading comprehension. Questions are mainly multiple choice with a large emphasis on reasoning skills. The format of the test is likely to be unfamiliar to your child and the difficulty of familiarisation materials can seem daunting. 11 Plus Hero is here to help you best prepare for the CEM exam with useful guidance and practice papers.

Test Overview

The CEM test consists of two exam papers, each approximately 60 minutes in length. These tests may both contain a mix of Verbal Reasoning, Non-Verbal Reasoning and Numerical Reasoning which differs for each cohort.

Paper One: (A choice of) Verbal Reasoning (VR) Non-Verbal Reasoning (NVR) and Numerical Reasoning (NR)

Paper Two: (A choice of) Verbal Reasoning (VR) Non-verbal Reasoning (NVR) and Numerical Reasoning (NR)

Additional Eligibility

In order for your daughter to be considered for more than one school, such as a school within the Slough Consortium, the raw marks of the test will be shared with them following the appropriate standardisation process. It is essential that you separately register for each school and consult the guidelines in each school’s admission policy. You must specify that your daughter will take the test at Kendrick School.

Education Health and Care Plan

Automatic admission applies to children with an Education Health and Care Plan or Statement of Educational Need which has Kendrick School named by the Local Authority. The admission of these qualifying students will reduce the overall availability of places for other applicants.

Oversubscription criteria

There are specific oversubscription criteria applied where there are more applicants than the 128 places. A qualifying score is used for candidates in categories 3-6 whilst a score 5 points lower than this score is applied for candidates in categories 1 and 2.

The oversubscription criteria is summarised below with places offered in the following order within each category:

  1. A girl who is a ‘looked after child’, or was previously a ‘looked after child’.
  2. Girls with Pupil or Service Premium and a permanent home address located within Priority Areas 1 and 2 of the designated area of the school. To qualify, she will still need to be living there at the time of admission to the school.

The next available places offered follow the list of ranked candidates until up to 75% (96) of places have been allocated:

  1. The girl’s permanent home address is within Priority Areas 1 and 2 of the school’s designated area. To qualify, she will still need to be living there at the time of admission to the school.

The remaining 25% (32) places will be offered in the following order until all 128 places have been filled:

  1. Girls with a permanent home address within Priority Area 1 of the designated area where they will be living during the time of their admission to the school.
  2. Girl with a permanent home address within the Priority Area 2 of the designated area where they will be living at the time of their admission to the school.
  3. Girls whose permanent home address is NOT in the designated area of the school.
