Introduction
Reading School is an outstanding (Ofsted, 2020) boys’ school with weekly boarding accommodation. Respecting tradition whilst embracing modern innovations is important for this school with an almost 900-year history. Students perform consistently well in their exams; in 2022, 88% of GCSE entries achieved grades 9-7 with 100% awarded the English Baccalaureate. High scoring subjects where candidates scored grade 9-8 included Chemistry (88%), Physics (87%), Computer Science (84%), Drama (84%) and Mathematics (83%).
Admission to Reading School involves a common admissions test of three elements provided by Future Stories Community Enterprise (FSCE), a subsidiary of Reading School. The FSCE test is similar to the CEM test. There is strong competition for entry as the school is often oversubscribed, with more boys achieving the eligible standard than there are available places. Reading School Exam Format
The Reading 11 plus exam is provided by FSCE and contains three elements: Maths, English and Creative Writing. There is a minimum eligible standard that must be achieved on each part of the test. The Creative Writing element is only marked if the English and Maths scores are acceptable. Following the minimum standard being reached in the Creative Writing element, candidates are ranked by their age-standardised scores in English and Maths, which are marked by computer.
Test Overview
The FSCE test consists of three papers, each with a question booklet and answer sheet. Some of the questions in papers 1 and 2 are multiple-choice whilst others have a free response box for candidates to write out full answers. There are also smaller boxes used for candidates to record one number or one letter. Paper 3 is the Creative Writing element of the test. The question booklet can be used for rough workings and planning – this content will not be marked. Candidates can only use the double-sided answer booklet for their creative writing and no additional paper is provided, so it is essential to keep the writing task to two sides only.

Catchment Area
For day students, the catchment area priority is based on home location and distance from the school. There is no catchment area requirement for boarding applicants.
Additional Eligibility
As the school is likely to be oversubscribed for Year 7 places, an eligible score does not guarantee your child a place at Reading School.
Oversubscription criteria using four categories will be applied until the 150 places have been filled:
Category 1: Candidates who are, or were previously, Looked After Children and/or were previously in care outside of England who achieve up to 5 marks below an eligible score.
Category 2: Candidates with proof of receipt of Pupil or Service Premium who achieve a score up to 5 marks below an eligible score.
Category 3: Candidates who required boarding facilities.
Category 4: All other Candidates.
Reading School FAQs
Reading School’s 11 Plus exam is set by FSCE and contains three elements: Maths, English and Creative Writing.
The school will consider evidence of exceptional circumstances such as illness, bereavement or anything outside of parents’ control which may have resulted in missing the deadline for test registration.
