Introduction
Bishop Wordworth’s School is a selective school for boys serving Salisbury and the surrounding area. It is a top performing school in the UK, consistently achieving high sets of results which represent this. Their most recent Ofsted rating saw them achieve an “Outstanding” rating, and continue to uphold it.
As previously stated, the students at Bishop Wordsworth consistently achieve high results at GCSE level. The 2019 GCSE examinations saw 98% of all students achieve at least a grade 5 in both English and Maths, leading the school to attain an ‘above average’ Progress 8 score. This means that students develop at a significant rate from KS2 to KS4 at Bishop Wordsworth, compared to the local and national average. Many students choose to pursue further education at Bishop Wordsworth’s Sixth form. This is a co-educational institution, attaining an equal level of academic success as its preceding secondary school. Following the 2022 A-Level examinations, 81% of all grades attained were A*-B, with a very high overall pass rate.
For the reasons outlined above, Bishop Wordsworth’s School is highly popular and oversubscribed. As a result, admission to the school is highly competitive. Students are selected for admission to the school based on their performance in the 11+ entrance test. This is an examination currently governed by the CEM exam board, consisting of two papers which both assess verbal, numerical and non-verbal reasoning. They are both multiple choice tests but are designed to push candidates beyond their Key Stage 2 education. Our resources with 11 Plus Hero help prepare your child for this CEM 11+, and for the future GL exam, providing them with a toolkit to have the best chance to succeed. We also provide information to help guide yourself and your child through the admissions process, so that you and your child can confidently and competently apply to Bishop Wordsworth’s School.

Prospective students are tested using a CEM 11+ examination. It is a multiple-choice assessment made up of two papers. Together, these papers will test Verbal Reasoning (comprehension, vocabulary and verbal reasoning), Numerical Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning. There is no dedicated English section in the tests. Furthermore, the tests are designed to reflect natural ability of the level which has been taught at KS2 throughout the country. Administered and marked by the CEM exam board, the 11+ can seem unfamiliar to students sitting it and revision for such can be a daunting process. At 11+ Hero, we are accustomed to CEM as well as the 11+ application and admissions process. For this reason, we provide a specialist set of tools to help your child do the best they can to succeed.
It is notable that the test is subject to change as of admissions for 2024. Please see the school website for further details.
Test Overview
The 11+ test consists of two papers, each lasting around 50 minutes. They are both multiple choice and are each made up of 3 key components to it: Verbal Reasoning, Non-Verbal Reasoning and Numerical Reasoning. Answers are completed, multiple-choice style, on separate answer sheets. The test is currently issued, marked and governed by the CEM exam board.
- Paper One: (A choice of) Verbal Reasoning (VR) Non-Verbal Reasoning (NVR) and Numerical Reasoning (NR)
- Paper Two: (A choice of) Verbal Reasoning (VR) Non-Verbal Reasoning (NVR) and Numerical Reasoning (NR)

Catchment Area
As stated in Bishop Wordsworth’s 2023 admissions policy, one way in which the school prioritises candidates is by using a ‘designated area’. A map of the ‘designated area’ is contained on the schools’ website at https://www.bishopwordsworths.org.uk/main-school/admissions/overview/bishop-wordsworths-school-designated-area/
Additional Eligibility
Oversubscription Criteria
Where there are more applicants who meet the required standard than there are places at the school, the following oversubscription criteria is used to prioritise students:
- Looked After or Previously Looked After Children;
- Applicants who receive or could receive free school meals at the time of the entrance exam;
- Applicants whose permanent home is within the schools ‘designated area’ map;*
- Applicants whose brother or sister is already at the School at the time of admission;
- Applicants who, at the time of the exam, have been recorded as qualifying for the Service Premium;
- Other applicants who have met the entry requirements.
*The 2023 admissions policy outlines a highly detailed definition of a ‘permanent home’ in the designated area. Please see the policy at https://www.bishopwordsworths.org.uk/assets/Uploads/Admissions-Policy-2022-23.pdf to understand whether your child fits into the definition.
Bishop Wordsworth’s School FAQs
The required standard for entry is subject to change each year. Furthermore, merely meeting the required standard does not guarantee a place at Bishop Wordsworth’s; the school uses the oversubscription criteria in their admissions policy to prioritise candidates for entry.
The 11+ is currently issued and governed by the CEM exam board. This CEM 11 Plus tests a child’s competence in Numerical Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning.
Please note that this exam is set to change to GL in 2024.
