The Sale Grammar School Entry Exam: Overview
Sale Grammar School’s 11 Plus entry exam consists of two CEM papers. These papers will test Verbal Reasoning, Non-Verbal Reasoning, and Mathematics. Each paper will be approximately 1 hour long, they will occur on the same day, and there will be a short break between the papers.

Extry Exam: Pass Criteria
The qualifying score is a mark of 334 or greater. Applicants must achieve the qualifying score in order to be offered a place. The scores will be adjusted to account for the age difference.
Catchment area
The priority admission area is defined by postcode M33, plus Trafford Authority residents within the M23, WA14, and WA15 postcodes. Applicants who live within the area will have greater priority. Oversubscription of applicants within the priority area will be decided by the shortest distance between their permanent home address and the school. Oversubscription of applicants living outside of the priority area is resolved by rank order of marks achieved in the entry exam, with the highest mark getting the greatest priority.
Additional eligibilities
Whenever there is oversubscription within a category, places will be allocated based on how far away the applicant lives from the school, with the closest getting greater priority.
- “Looked After Children” and previously “Looked After Children” will be awarded a place.
- “Pupil Premium” – Up to 15 applicants who are eligible for “Pupil Premium” will be awarded places in the following order:
- Applicants who live within the priority area, oversubscription within the category will be decided by the shortest distance from the applicant’s home to the school.
- Applicants who attend a Trafford state-funded primary school who live within the Trafford Local Authority but not in the catchment area. Places in this category will be decided by rank order of marks in the entry exam.
