Introduction

Bournemouth School is a selective boys’ academy based in Bournemouth, with students from the town itself and the surrounding area. They carry a status of ‘outstanding’, following their previous Ofsted inspection, proving a stimulating academic environment, evidenced by a set of consistently high exam results.

To expand, in the 2019, 2020 and 2021 academic year, 97% (or more) of students at the school  or more attained grades 5-9 in Maths and English (equivalent to C-A* grades under the previous GCSE marking criteria). This is significantly higher than the local authority average of 51% and the national average of 43%. Further, in 2019, 99% of students stayed in full-time education or entered into employment. Of that 99%, many students attending Bournemouth School enter into Further Education with the school’s adjoining Sixth Form, equally successful academically. In the 2022 academic year, 86% of all grades achieved were A*-C, with 49% of all grades at A*-A. The aforementioned grades evidence that students’ academic progression from primary school is proliferated by a grammar school education at Bournemouth School.

As a result, admission to Bournemouth School is highly competitive, with the school constantly oversubscribed and only a limited number of places. The boys’ school selects students based on their performance in the GL 11+ designed for admission to the Bournemouth Consortium of Grammar Schools. This consortium of schools includes Bournemouth School, Bournemouth School For Girls, Parkstone Grammar School and Poole Grammar School. This selective test is a GL 11+, under the GL exam board. The assessment consists of three multiple choice exam papers, each testing a child’s competence in a different subject: English, Maths and Verbal Reasoning. The assessment is designed to push a candidate beyond the ordinary realms of primary education. Our resources with 11 Plus Hero help prepare your child for this GL 11+, providing them with a toolkit to have the best chance to succeed for admission into Bournemouth School. We also provide information to help guide yourself and your child through the admissions process, so that you and your child can confidently and competently apply to your chosen schools.

The Bournemouth Consortium 11+ Format

Bournemouth School, along with all 4 schools in the Bournemouth Consortium of Grammar Schools, select students based on their performance in the Bournemouth Schools 11+ Exam, under the GL Exam Board. Registration for the test is done via every individual school. If you wish to register your child for the test for entry to Bournemouth School, it must be done via their registration form; this can be found here – https://www.bournemouth-school.org/385/year-7-registration-form-for-2023 . The 11+ exam is a multiple choice assessment divided into 3 papers, each paper testing a child in a different subject area: Maths, English and Verbal Reasoning. The content of the assessment is beyond what is taught at primary education level; the test is designed to push candidates with the question difficulty and formatting. The unfamiliar format of the test and its difficulty can seem daunting. The 11 Plus Hero is here to help. We understand and are accustomed to the content of the Bournemouth 11+ test and the GL exam board, including their methodology and method of marking. We can provide a toolkit to your child, familiarising them with the test format and ensuring they have the best chance to succeed.

The Bournemouth Consortium 11+: Overview

The Bournemouth Consortium 11+ is a multiple choice paper with 3 key components to it; it is overseen by the GL exam board. The Bournemouth 11+ is a multiple choice test and will assess your child’s competency in English, Maths and Verbal Reasoning. Pass Mark

There is not set ‘pass rate’ for the GL 11+ for entry to Bournemouth School. The ‘pass rate’ changes according to each year, to assess whether the boys meet the ‘required standard’ for admission to the school. This is contained in the schools admissions policy – test scores are received in mid-October of the preceding year of entry; for example for entry in 2023, test scores will be received by mid-October 2022. It is notable that the Bournemouth consortium uses a method of standardised marking, meaning that younger children are not penalised for their age, the results are statistically standardised to compare any child’s score average to the average score of their school year. As aforementioned, boys’ scores will be assessed as to whether they meet the ‘required standard’ and are therefore eligible for admission to the Bournemouth grammar schools. What the required standard is cannot be predicted and is subject to change each year. But, it is estimated that the top 25% of students will meet this and it is likely there will be more eligible students than places. For more information please see our article ‘Selective Test in Bournemouth – GL 11 Plus”

Catchment Area

Bournemouth School operates on a “Priority Admission” area, used in their oversubscription criteria. Please note this is subject to change. The Priority Admission area is contained in their 2023 Admissions policy; this method of prioritisation ensures that education is provided for pupils who are mainly drawn from the area in which the school is situated.

The Priority Area is defined as:

  • BH1, BH2, BH3, BH4, BH5, BH6, BH7, BH8, BH9, BH10, BH11, BH12 5, BH23 1, BH23 2, BH23 3.

Additional Eligibility

Where the number of eligible pupils reaching the required standard in the 11+ entrance examination exceeds the number of places available, the school uses the following set of oversubscription criteria in conjunction with the Priority Areas to make offers; places will be allocated in the following order of priority:

  1. Eligible boys who are Looked After children or Previously Looked After Children;
  2. those who are eligible for the Pupil Premium** will be ranked next, in order of entrance test score, those with the highest scores being given the most priority;
  3. Those who live in the priority area, in order of entrance test scores;
  4. Eligible boys who are sons of members of staff where the member of staff has been employed at the school for two or more years at the time when the application for admission to the school was made;
  5. The remaining eligible boys will be ranked in order of the entrance test scores, with those boys obtaining the highest scores given higher priority.

*Looked After or Previously Looked After children are those who have been in local authority care or previously have been in local authority care

**Children who qualify for the Pupil Premium grant are those who are in receipt of Free School Meals as of 31st October of the preceding year of entry, or are children of the UK Armed Forces at any point in the 6 years prior to 31st October of the preceding year of entry

Bournemouth School FAQs

There is no set ‘pass mark’ for entry into Bournemouth School. Instead, boys’ aggregate score on the 11+ will be assessed as to whether it meets the ‘required standard’ for admission. The required standard is subject to change each year; it will be issued to parents with the child’s actual score on results day, October of the preceding year of entry. Where the required standard is met, boys will be eligible for admission. This information is kept in their 2023 admissions policy.

Bournemouth School is one of the 4 grammar schools in the Bournemouth Consortium of grammar schools. Application for the test is done directly through the school itself, via online or paper form. However, all 4 schools use the same test. The test is a GL assessment, testing a child’s competence in English, Maths and Verbal Reasoning.

  • The GL assessment website hosts familiarisation material to allow children to get used to the format of their exams.
  • Use the Maths, English and Verbal Reasoning materials to properly prepare for the Bournemouth GL 11+ test at https://11plus.gl-assessment.co.uk
