Introduction

Founded in 1985, North Halifax Grammar School is a co-educational state grammar and science college based in Illingworth, Halifax. The school strongly follows its motto, ‘Living to Learn | Learning to Live’, with nine co-operative values at the heart of their ethos. The key values all begin with E, C and M; these letters are sourced from the phrase ‘Every Child Matters’ and the school’s status as a specialist science college with Einstein’s famous quotation: E = MC².

The school has performed consistently well academically, with 90% of students achieving strong passes at Grade 5 and above, including English and maths, and 97.5% passing at Grade 4 (equivalent to a ‘C’ grade) in 2019. In the same year, at A level, grade C and above was achieved in over 80% of the exams, with 27 students achieving one or more A* grades. Traditionally, students move on to further their education at university, with Cambridge and Russell Groups being popular choices as well as universities abroad.

North Halifax Grammar and The Crossley Heath Grammar have a joint registration and admissions process which complies with Calderdale Council’s requirements within Yorkshire. North Halifax Grammar School FAQs

The two papers are set by the GL 11 Plus exam board. These assessments test a child’s competency in English, Maths, Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning using multiple choice papers which are externally marked via computer.

When there is a large cohort of candidates, the schools are required to ensure supervision requirements of the children are effectively met. This means your child may sit the exam at The Crossley Heath, though it does not make any difference where your child sits the test as children are housed according to postcodes where possible.

GL assessment hosts familiarisation material to allow children to get used to the format of their exams.
