Introduction

Founded in 1985, following a merger between Crossley and Porter School and Heath Grammar School, The Crossley Heath School is a co-educational grammar and specialist language college based in Halifax. It became an academy in 2013 and operates a popular house system with four houses competing across the year in various events. The school’s unique 1861 building allows students to experience history alongside modern conveniences within their learning environment.

Rated ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted, The Crossley Heath School performs above the local average academically, with 99% of pupils achieving 5 or more 9-4 GCSE grades in English and maths and a 99% pass rate at A Level with 66% A*-B grades recorded in 2021.

The Crossley Heath School and North Halifax Grammar operate a joint registration and admissions process which complies with Calderdale Council’s requirements within Yorkshire. The Crossley Heath Exam Format

The Crossley Heath exam papers have been created by GL Assessment and scores are age-standardised. 11 Plus Hero has created resources that you can use to help prepare for GL 11 Plus style exams.

Test Overview

There are two components which make up the exam used for North Halifax Grammar School and Crossley Heath Grammar School.

  • Paper One: A multiple choice English and Verbal Reasoning paper
  • Paper Two: A multiple choice Maths and Non-Verbal Reasoning paper

Additional Eligibility

In the event of oversubscription to the school, the priority is as follows:

  1. Current and previously looked after children
  2. Children with Pupil Premium
  3. Children with siblings at the school
  4. Children who live closest to the school

The Crossley Heath School FAQs

There isn’t an exact pass mark as the test scores are age-standardised for fairness.

The two papers are set by the GL 11 Plus exam board. These assessments test a child’s competency in English, Maths, Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning using multiple choice papers which are externally marked via computer.

When there is a large cohort of candidates, the schools are required to ensure supervision requirements of the children are effectively met. This means your child may sit the exam at North Halifax, though it does not make any difference where your child sits the test as children are housed according to postcodes where possible.

GL assessment hosts familiarisation material to allow children to get used to the format of their exams:
