Introduction
Churston Ferrers is a co-educational selective school serving Brixham, Devon and the surrounding area. The school prioritises not only academic achievement, but providing a well-rounded education for the students, with their happiness and a central focus.
Academically, the school is consistently successful. Following the 2019 GCSE examinations, 93% of all students achieved at least a grade 5 in both English and Maths papers. Furthermore, 99% of the students in that cohort continued on to further full-time education or employment. The school also has an above average Progress 8 score, meaning children attending that school advance further from KS2 to KS4 compared to the local and national average. In addition, many of the students at Churston Ferrers choose to further their education at the grammar school’s Sixth Form. A key aim of the Sixth Form is to ensure students achieve the best possible A-Level grades, setting the foundation for a broad range of university and career options.
As with all four grammar schools under the Torbay council, Churston Ferrers is competitive for entry. Churston Ferrers select students based on their performance in the Torbay Council 11+ test. This entrance test was governed by the CEM exam board but is proposed to be changed to GL Assessment for September 2023. The current test assesses a student’s competency in Numerical Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning. The 11+ is designed to push candidates beyond their Key Stage 2 education. Along with all the grammar schools under Torbay Council, prospective students have previously been tested using a CEM 11+ examination. This was a multiple-choice assessment made up of two papers. Together, these papers test Verbal Reasoning (comprehension, vocabulary and verbal reasoning), Numerical Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning. There is no dedicated English section in the tests. Furthermore, the tests were designed to reflect natural ability of the level which has been taught at KS2 throughout the country. Administered and marked by the CEM exam board, the 11+ can seem unfamiliar to students sitting it and revision for such can be a daunting process.
The Torbay Selective Schools are presently consulting on a change to the admissions procedures for entry into Year 7 in September 2024 which a change to GL. At 11+ Hero, we are accustomed to both CEM and GL, as well as the 11+ application and admissions process. For this reason, we provide a specialist set of tools to help your child do the best they can to succeed.
Test Overview
At present, the Torbay Council Grammar Schools Entrance Test consists of two papers, each lasting around 50 minutes. They are both multiple choice and are each made up of 3 key components to it: Verbal Reasoning, Non-Verbal Reasoning and Numerical Reasoning. Answers are completed, multiple choice style, on separate answer sheets. The test has historically been issued, marked and governed by the CEM exam board.
Each test may contain a mix of Verbal Reasoning, Non-Verbal Reasoning and Numerical Reasoning, it is at the Consortium’s discretion as to which are included; there is usually a mix of content in each of the two papers

Catchment Area
There is no catchment area for admission to Churston Ferrers Grammar School. Only where there is a tie break in the admissions process, will distance be used to prioritise a student for admission. This is the distance measured from the main school entrance to their home address on a straight-line basis.

Allocation Priority:
Children are ranked based on their standardised score in the 11+ test and are categorised based on this.
- First, students in ‘Category A’, meaning the first 130 highest scoring candidates in the 11+ will be offered places.
- Second, candidates with a CEM score which places them in the range between the 131st candidate and the 180th candidate will be admitted on first condition if they satisfy the following criteria:
- They are in care, or have been in care;
- They are in receipt of the Pupil Premium;
- They are children of working staff at the time of the test.
After candidates satisfying that criteria are admitted, the rest are offered places according to their rank CEM score, until 150 places are allocated.
- Candidates with a test score lower than the 180th candidate will be ranked by CEM score.
Tie Break:
Where two or more children achieve the same total score, their respective positions in the rank order will be determined by closeness to the school.

Churston Ferrers Grammar School FAQs
