Introduction

Chatham and Clarendon Grammar School was formed in 2011 by the union of Chatham House Grammar School  for Boys (est.1797) and Clarendon House Grammar School for Girls (est. 1905) to establish itself as a single converter academy in Ramsgate, Kent. The school now accepts a mixed intake of 180 year 7 students operating single sex teaching in key stage 3 at the lower school based on the Chatham House site. This smaller, more inclusive environment within a larger establishment is an ideal way of enabling an easy transition from primary to secondary schooling. When children advance to years 10 and 11 single sex teaching continues for the core GCSE subjects, however classes are mixed for optional subjects and for all A-level classes beyond. The school boasts excellent facilities for sports with both grass and astroturf pitches and students have access to two school libraries as well as the modern and refurbished Ramsgate Library close by.  A school community is fostered through their house system which engages students in inter-house competitive events in sports, spelling, debating and the arts. Each house has their own elected charity and hosts fundraising events from cake sales to talent contests.

The school boasts strong performance in English and Maths GCSE’s with 68% of pupils in 2019 achieving grades 5 or above in both exams (equivalent to a high C or low B grade under the previous GCSE mark system) compared to the national average of 43% and Kent council average of 46%. The most recent data from 2021 for individual exams shows that grade 5 or above was achieved in Maths, English Language and English Literature by 80%, 96% and 91% of students respectively. Chatham and Clarendon Grammar also operates a sixth form which takes students from the lower form in addition to opening remaining places irrespective of gender. Strong form continues here and in 2021 the percentage of students achieving grades A* to B for Maths was 71% and for English Language & Literature 56%.
