Introduction

Dartford Grammar School for Girls is a selective school accepting female students through years 7-11 with a mixed gender sixth form. It is located adjacent to Dartford Grammar School which caters for boys in years 7-11, again with mixed sixth form. First established as a paid school in 1904, the school in now a state funded selective Grammar with academy status as of 2017. Their vision for the school and the wider school community is ‘Working together to achieve academic excellence and personal potential’. The former appears to hold true given the Dartford Grammar School for Girls Ofsted report of outstanding in all areas at last full inspection in 2016, which was maintained in 2021 at interim report. Children are taught not just what is in their core subject syllabuses for passing exams but what their teachers have deemed is important for delivering a full rounded and thorough education with subject understanding and not simply memorisation. There are a host of extracurricular clubs and activities for students to become involved with including choirs, arts, sports and the Duke of Edinburgh Award. Dartford Grammar School for Girls regularly takes part in philanthropic events raising money for both national and local causes. In recent years these include a National Languages themed cake sale benefiting the National Deaf Children’s Society and an art competition benefiting Children in Need.  

Dartford Grammar School for girls boasts strong performance at GCSE level both in terms of the range of subjects and the grades students receive. Compared to the local authority average of 44%, almost double the number of students enter for the English Baccalaureate at 80%. Entering is automatic and denotes students who have elected for a rounded education, studying subjects in; English, Maths, Sciences, Humanities and a language at GCSE. Girls undertaking this path perform much better than the local average. Pass Mark

Following the test, on results day your daughter will receive three scores; one for Paper One, one for Paper Two and an aggregate score of the two combined. These scores have been standardised and slightly adjusted to make considerations for difference in age within a school year group. In order to be awarded admission to Grammar School your daughter must surpass a threshold standardised score that would place her in the top 25% (approximately) of students in the country. This threshold score changes every year but more information can be found in the article ‘Selective Tests in Kent – The Kent Test’.

Catchment Area

Dartford Grammar School for Girls operates a priority catchment area and reserves 100 places for Girls with permanents addresses in any of the following Parishes

  • Ash-cum-Ridley, Fawkham Stone, Bean, Hartley, Sutton at Hone and Hawley, Crockenhill, Hextable, Swanley, Darenth, Horton Kirby and South Darenth, Swanscombe and Greenhithe, Eynsford, Longfield and New Barn, West Kingsdown, Farningham, Southfleet and Wilmington
  • Priority will be given to students in these areas with the highest aggregated Kent Test score 
  • When equal scoring is attributed children with closest permanent residence will be given priority. Distance as measured by the National Land and Property Gazetteer (NLPG) address point data.

Additional Eligibility

Dartford Grammar School for Girls will make special admissions considerations for girls from a number of specific backgrounds or with special requirements.  

  • Girls with an EHCP (Education, Health and Care Plan) who have passed the Kent Test and whos plan mentions Dartford Grammar School
  • Girls who are currently or have previously been looked after by the local authority social services
  • Girls who are eligible for Pupil Premium at time of entry to the school (this is true if they receive free school meals or have done at any point in the last six years).

  • There is no standard passing score or percentage which holds true for every year for 11 Plus selection tests. These assessments are designed to select the girls most suited for Grammar School education which roughly works out to be the top 25% of children in the country. The Kent Test or Kent Procedure for Entrance to Secondary Schools Age 11 Assessment Tests (PESE) is composed of three elements. Two multiple choice papers of 60 minutes each. The first assesses development in English and Maths, the second in Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning. The third element is a creative Writing exercise. The threshold score for admission is generated from papers one and two, the creative writing exercise is only taken into consideration if the aggregate score is insufficient to pass the Kent test, at which point you will need to appeal for an admission place.
