Introduction

Gravesend Grammar School is a Kentish selective Grammar School with Academy status which accepts boys only up until the sixth form and was first opened in 1893. As a specialist maths, computing and languages institution, the school attracts additional governmental funding to further expand these resources. The Schools motto is ‘Consule Cunctis’ meaning ‘Care for All’ and is reflected not only by their commitment to monitoring student well-being via their dedicated pastoral team but also to each individual student’s academic requirements. Students are encouraged to study independently to develop the self-reliance they will need in the wider world by the provision of additional learning material beyond their syllabuses. However this is done in a constant environment of support where letters of praise will be sent home to the parents of students doing well and personalised support strategies with additional tutoring provided to those falling behind. Gravesend Grammar School established strong links with its local community including the Universities of Kent and Southampton who both have a hand in designing the curriculum as well as local religious institutions including St George’s and Milton Churches and the Gurdwara. The School boasts a strong provision of sporting activities and clubs including inter house competitions which is only bolstered by links to local sporting facilities which provide access to specialist equipment and coaching.

The Progress 8 score for Gravesend Grammar School is 0.54 on a scale of -1 to 1 which places them in the highest possible category ‘Well above average’ for the betterment of children attending the school. Progress 8 compares different schools and is a measure of how well students who received similar results at the end of Key stage 2 perform by the end of Key stage 4. If a school receives a score of zero it means the students made an average amount of progress. A grand majority of students (95%) receive Maths and English GCSE’s at grades 5 and above which far exceeds the national average of 43%. Boys perform well in a range of subjects as can be seen by Gravesend Grammar School’s Attainment 8 score of 67.4 as compared to the national average 46.7. This metric takes into account GCSE grades from 8 different subjects including English, Maths, Science (including computer science, humanities, languages and others to give a more rounded accounting of student development.

Pass Mark

The GL 11 Plus Kent Test: Pass Criteria

Selective Grammar School tests do not have a set pass criteria in terms of pre-defined number of marks. The threshold score for Grammar School admittance changes on a yearly basis depending on the test that was set and ranks how well children taking the test performed. It is estimated that the top 25% of children nationally will meet the defined threshold for their school year. More detail and examples of threshold scores from previous years can be found in the centralised article ‘Selective Tests in Kent – The Kent Test’, but please note that the threshold numbers reported are highly unlikely to be the thresholds in subsequent years.

Catchment Area

Gravesend Grammar School operates a three tier priority catchment area, but reports that it does often manage to recruit from outside these. In distance disputes the school uses the National Land and Property Gazetteer (NLPG) address point data to determine which child has permanent residence in closest proximity to a fixed point at Gravesend Grammar School. The three tiers are:

  • Boys living in the Borough of Gravesham
  • Boys living in the civil parishes of Ash-cum-Ridley, Bean, Fawkham, Hartley, Longfield and New Barn, Southfleet, Swanscombe and Greenhithe and Stansted.
  • Boys living in the civil parishes of Stone, Darenth, Horton Kirby and South Darenth,
  • Cliffe and Cliffe Woods

Additional Eligibility

Priority admission is given to children with certain additional eligibilities.

  • Boys with a statement of educational need naming the school, children qualifying for Pupil Premium (in receipt of free school meals within the last 6 years), those in local authority care, those with health or special access requirement best met by the school and children who already have a sibling in attendance. The school reports that this accounts for a relatively small amount of admission places.

Gravesend Grammar School FAQs

The threshold passing mark for selective tests changes every year and is not made publicly available until after admission allocations have been made. This is because the raw marks from your sons Paper One and Paper Two in the Kent Test are statistically standardised and aggregated to create a ranking system of how well any one child performed compared to all other children in the year group. Roughly 25% of children nationally will receive a score above this threshold and will qualify for Grammar School. See the section Gravesend Grammar School Exam Format for more details.

  • The Kent Test as set by the GL 11 exam board is divided into two multiple choice papers and one creative writing exercise. The papers assess development in English. Maths, Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning. The creative writing test is assessed by a panel of headteachers only at the appeal stage following unsuccessful admission from the marks on the paper. Details are provided in the section Gravesend Grammar School Exam Format.
