Introduction
Maidstone Grammar School for Girls is a specialist science school which solely accepts girls up until the mixed gender sixth form. At the latest evaluation Ofsted rated the school as ‘Outstanding’ commenting of the students ‘…not only are their academic standards high, but they also develop as confident articulate individuals ready to take full advantage of opportunities as they arise.’ This is likely at least in part due tot their commitment and consequential accreditation as an ‘Advanced thinking school’ by the University of Exeter. A programme which encourages the girls to think for themselves rather than simply recall information, building personal resilience, persistence and independence to prepare for a successful future. The school has a tradition of philanthropy, every year head students organising a RAG (raising and giving) week with thousands of pounds being raised for charities and their partner school in Nepal.
One of the most important metrics of a school is the Progress 8 score which tells you how much progress the average child in attendance at a specific school has made between Key stage 2 and Key stage 4 when compared to children attending other schools who achieved similar key stage 2 results. More than just catering for its already high performing students, Maidstone Grammar School for Girls can boast that they actually improve the stead of girls in attendance with a Progress 8 score of 0.83, on a scale of -1 to 1, which places it in the highest category ‘Well above average’ and among the top 2% of schools in the country. A score of +1 would mean that the average child archives 1 grade higher in all 8 of the subject categories that go into the metric. In their Maths and English GCSEs 96% of students receive grades 5 or above compared to the national average of 43%.

Passing the test is a requirement for admission, as it is for any grammar school in Kent. For this reason we have created a centralised article explaining the specifiics of the Kent Test so that we can provide consistent and thorough advice for all Kentish grammars, which can be found HERE- ‘Selective Tests in Kent – The Kent Test’. Below we provide and overview.
The GL 11 Plus Kent Test: Overview

Pass Mark
The GL 11 Plus Kent Test: Pass Criteria
The raw scores from papers one and two will be standardised and age adjusted to produce an aggregate score and this is used to rank students in terms of eligibility for grammar school places. It is estimated that the top 25% of children nationally will qualify for Grammar school admission. Because the admission process is based on ranking students and the tests might differ in difficulty dependant on the specific questions asked in a given year there is no set pass mark that is consistent every year. Further information on the pass threshold from previous years can be found in the centralised article: ‘Selective Tests in Kent – The Kent Test’.
