Introduction
The Judd School is a selective grammar school in Tonbridge, Kent accepting boys in years 7 to 11, with girls joining in the sixth form. The school holds specialisms in Music, Maths, Science and English which attracts additional funding to expand these programmes. Latest inspection saw The Judd School ranked as Outstanding by Ofsted. Inspectors commented ‘All students and groups of students achieve exceptionally well. Attainment and progress are exceptionally high across all subjects.’ Senior leadership at The Judd School championed the school motto ‘Learn, Grow, Belong’ evident by the aforementioned academic success but also in the extra-curricular provision and pastoral care provided by the school. Students are encouraged to contribute to the school community. All years groups have representatives at school council meetings and can become involved in the running of charity and open day events. There is also regular inter-house competition in the fields of sports, arts and music. Extra-curricular activities also include involvement in the Duke of Edinburgh Award and the Combined Cadet Force as well as a range of clubs such as debate, gardening, young engineers and the medical society.
Boys attending the Judd School achieve very highly in their academic studies. At 98% almost all boys achieve grades 5 or above in English and Maths which when compared o the national average of 43% is very impressive. Achievement is not just high in core subjects however, as can be seen from The Judd School’s Attainment 8 score of 76 versus the national average 46.7. Attainment 8 measures how well the boys have performed in up to 8 of their GCSE’s and can give a better understanding of overall success that just looking at core subjects. Potentially the most important statistic hoever is the schools Progress 8 score of 0.48 on a scale of -1 to 1 placing The Judd School in the ‘Above average’ category. Progress 8 is a comparison of how much progress children achieving similar grades at Key stage 2 have made by the time they leave key stage 2 depending on which school they have attended. A positive progress 8 score of 0.48 means boys attending The Judd School on average achieve roughly half a grade higher at key stage 4 than the national average based on their results at Key stage 2.

The Judd school Exam Format
We at 11 Plus Hero are here to describe the principles of The Kent Test and provide you with some practice papers and familiarisation materials. Produced by the GL 11 Plus exam board, this test must be taken and passed to gain entrance to any grammar school under the Kent County Council authority. The test can only be taken once, but passing grants admission eligibility to any grammar in Kent.
The GL 11 Plus Kent Test: Overview
There are three components in the GL 11 Plus Kent Test. We describe them in brief here but in order to provide consistent and complete advice we have created a single in-depth guide for all Kent Schools who take the test here: ‘Selective Tests in Kent – The Kent Test’.
Paper One
A multiple choice English and Maths paper written by GL 11 Plus and lasting 1 hour.
Paper Two
A multiple choice Verbal Reasoning and Non-verbal reasoning paper written by GL 11 Plus and lasting 1 hour.
Additional
A creative writing exercise written by the school and lasting 40 minutes.

The raw scores from the two multiple choice papers are marked by machine, added together and standardised alongside all other tests that year, to produce a final aggregate score. Statistical comparison of the scores from across the year group is used to determine a threshold pass mark, above which children will qualify for admissions eligibility to grammar school. It is estimated that the top 25% of children nationally will reach this level. Catchment Area
The Judd School has a PAN of 180 students. Of these, 157 places are allocated to children occupying permanent residence in an ‘Inner Area’ defined by a number of postcodes listed below. The remaining admission places are reserved for any students living in the ‘Outer Area’, defined as being within the United Kingdom but not within the Inner area. Any instances of equal eligibility will be determined by the applicant who lives in closest proximity to the school being granted admission, or failing that random selection. Inner area postcodes:
- TN1, TN2, TN3, TN4, TN8, TN9, TN10, TN11, TN12, TN13, TN14, TN15; ME18, ME19; TN16 1** and TN16 2** (not TN16 3** or TN16 9**); DA4 0** (not DA4 9**).
- Plus the civil parish of Halstead (where this is not included above).
Additional Eligibility
Children from certain backgrounds, especially those who have a health or social consideration that would be especially served by The Judd School, are granted priority of admission. Regardless, it is still a requirement that children have passed the Kent Test. Depending on whether children fall into the Inner area or Outer area bracket admissions criteria are subtly different. Any child with a Education, Health and Care Plan that specifically mentions The Judd School will be granted admission. The school has a Specialist Resource Provision for up to 4 students with Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD).
Inner Area
- Up to 5 places are reserved for children from the inner area who qualify for free school meals. Remaining places will go to any children who qualify for pupil premium. These places will be allocated based on the ranked highest score in the Kent Test
- Any child who either is currently or at one point was in the care of the local authority and has passed the Kent Test threshold will be admitted.
- The remaining places will be awarded to those children in the catchment area in order of the highest aggregate Kent Test score. Equal scoring will be differentiated by the proximity of their permanent place of residence from the school as determined by the National Land and Property Gazetteer (NLPG) address point data. Failing this distinction then random selection.
Outer area
- Any child who either is currently or at one point was in the care of the local authority and has passed the Kent Test threshold will be admitted.
- The remaining places will be awarded to those children in the catchment area in order of the highest aggregate Kent Test score. Equal scoring will be differentiated by the proximity of their permanent place of residence from the school as determined by the National Land and Property Gazetteer (NLPG) address point data. The Judd School FAQs
- The threshold passing mark is determined on a yearly basis by a statistical comparison to the scores of every child from that year. It is not possible to state the threshold pass mark until after the test has taken place. Do note however that The Judd School operates superselective admission whereby the highest scoring students are granted priority of admission. For more details see the Pass Mark section.
- The Judd School uses the GL 11 Plus exam board created Kent Test to determine if students would respond well to grammar school education. This is composed of a number of multiple choice question papers in English, Maths, Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning plus an extended writing task set by the school.
