Introduction

Wilmington Grammar School for Girls is a selective academy in Wilmiington Kent offering single sex education for girls aged 11 to 16 with a mixed gender sixth form. The School has a partnership with the nearby Wilmington Grammar School for Boys which allows for the expansion of options in the sixth form as subjects can be studied at either site. The school holds specialist status in both Maths and Computing. Rated outstanding by Ofsted in 2015 and followed up in 2021, inspectors were impressed with the quality of teaching at the school, commenting ‘Teaching, learning and assessment are outstanding. Teachers use their very strong subject knowledge to develop pupils’ passion for learning.’ Beyond academics the students in attendance have the opportunity to involve themselves in many extracurricular activities, an opportunity which many take up. Programmes such as sports, arts, language and film are available and new provisions are made at the request of students such as the recent establishment of the debating club. 

Academic achievement is high at Wilmington Grammar School for Girls. Full details of the 2022 results are yet to be made available however the school reports that the average GCSE grade received by students was Grade 7 (equivalent to an A in the previous system) with over a third of GCSEs at Grade 8 to 9. At the last full reporting in 2019 the percentage of students achieving grades 5 or above in their core GCSE’s,  English and maths, was 91 versus the national average of 43%. Achievement is also high across a greater range of subjects as can be seen by the school Attainment 8 score of 65.4 versus the national average 46.7. Attainment 8 measures how well students have performed in 8 of their best GCSE’s from categories of English, Maths, three English Baccalaureate subjects (including sciences, languages and humanities) and three other subjects) and three other subjects. Attainment 8 is sometimes considered a better metric of overall success.

Wilmington Grammar School for Girls Exam Format

Wilmington Grammar School for Girls carries out the Kent Test provided by the GL 11 Plus exam board. This test is shared by all Kentish grammars and passing the test will make a girl eligible for admission to all schools. The Kent Test assesses your child’s progress in Maths and English to KS2 levels as well as their capacity for verbal reasoning and non-verbal reasoning.

The GL 11 Plus Kent Test: Pass Criteria

An applicants score in the Kent Test is calculated by combining the results of the two papers with a statistical standardisation based on how well all students did in the tests and an adjustment for the age of children within the year group. This gives your child’s aggregate Kent Test score which is compared to the agreed upon Kent Test threshold score for that year. This threshold does change ona yearly basis dependant on how well the entire year group has done. It is estimated that the top 25% of childre nin the country will qualify for grammar school. At Wilmington Grammar School for Girls the top 10% of applicants performing strongest in the Maths section of the Kent Test will be granted Governors Places which grants them priority of admission over others.

Catchment Area

Wilmington Grammar School for Girls operates a tiered admission catchment area. Within these categories girls will be admitted in the priority order of which child permanently lives at a home which is in closest proximity to a fixed point at the school as defined by the National Land and Property Gazetteer address point data. The catchment tiers are as follows: 

  1. Those girls who occupy permanent residence at a distance of 1.5 miles from the school or otherwise live in the parishes of: Ash Cum Ridley, Badgers Mount, Bean, Crockenhill, Darenth, Dartford, Dunton Green, Eynsford, Farningham, Fawkham, Halstead, Hartley, Hextable, Horton Kirby & South Darenth, Istead Rise (ward), Kemsing, Longfield & New Barn, Meopham, Otford, Shoreham, Southfleet, Stansted, Stone, Sutton at Hone & Hawley, Swanley, Swanscombe & Greenhithe, West Kingsdown, Wilmington and Wrotham. 
  2. Those girls who occupy permanent residence at a distance of 3 miles from the school if they are applying under the Pupil Premium clause as described below. 
  3. Any other girl living outside of these named areas will be admitted in priority order depending on the distance of their home to the school.

Additional Eligibility

It is a requirement of all applicants that they have passed the Kent Test. Some children will be granted priority of admission to Wilmington Grammar School for Girls if there is a health or social consideration that would make admission especially beneficial to their wellbeing. 

  • Girls with a special educational need or education health and care plan specifically naming Wilmington Grammar School for Girls will be admitted. 
  • Governor Places – 18 places, equating to 10% of the PAN, will be awarded to those girls who performed most strongly on the Mathematics section of the Kent Test even if they would not otherwise have been admitted based on the other criteria. 
  • Those girls who have a sibling in attendance of either the Wilmington Grammar School for Girls or the partner school the Wilmington Grammar School for Boys will be admitted with priority. 
  • Girls who have a parent employed by the school where the parent has been employed for over two years or otherwise were hired in an area of recognisable skill shortage for the school. 
  • Those girls who qualify for Pupil Premium, eligible if they have received free school meals at any point in the previous 6 years. These girls will need to apply by additionally filling out the ‘Wilmington Grammar School for Girls Supplementary form 2023 Entry’ which can be found in Section 3. 

Wilmington Grammar School for Girls FAQs

  • The threshold passing mark for admission is decided upon by analysing the results that were achieved for that year and as such is only calculated after the test has been taken. Further details can be found in the main text in the Pass Mark section. 
  • The Kent Test or Kent PESE is used to determine if girls will be deemed ‘Selective’ and so eligible for grammar school admission. This test is composed on two multiple choice papers in English, Maths, Verbal reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning. There is also a creative writing exercise which is only marked at the appeal stage if the Kent Test threshold is not reached. For more details see the  Exam Format section.
