Introduction
Ripon Grammar School is a co-educational, selective mixed grammar school for children aged 11-18 with boarding facilities for up to 100 students. It is located in Ripon, North Yorkshire and has been part of the local community since the seventh century. Sport, music and drama are particularly strong programmes at the school, combined with the opportunities to volunteer and experience outdoor trips. Ripon Grammar is very popular with families in the area and has been voted the top state school in the North in The Sunday Times Parent Power survey for the ninth time in 2022.
Ofsted previously rated the school as ‘Outstanding’ for boarding and education, academic results and ‘value added’ progress, which is supported by the students’ exceptional performance at GCSE and A level, achieving close to 100% five A*- C (level 9-4 in the new grading system) GCSE grades and over 80% A* – B A-levels every year.
Admission to Ripon Grammar and other grammar schools within North Yorkshire is highly competitive due to the outstanding results of these schools. Students are offered a place based on their performance in the entrance test run by the local authority and set by the GL exam board. There are two papers candidates must sit which contain content not typically taught within school. 11 Plus Hero has prepared information and resources to help guide you and your child through the admissions process and exam content so you can feel prepared and confident that you have the tools to succeed when applying for a place and preparing for the test.

Catchment Area
A registration letter for the exam is sent out in the summer term to all pupils who live in and attend a school inside the Ripon catchment area. You will need to confirm whether you wish your child to sit the test or be withdrawn and send the reply form to the local authority. If this form is not received by 26th June, the child will be withdrawn from the test.
In area pupils who attend a school outside of the catchment area will need to make an application to register for the test. Out of area pupils, including those attending an in-area school, will also need to make an application to sit the test.
The catchment areas for secondary schools are marked on this North Yorkshire County Council map: https://maps.northyorks.gov.uk/connect/analyst/mobile/#/main?mapcfg=secondary_catchments
