Introduction

Mayfield Grammar School is a selective school in Kent for girls in years 7-11 with a coeducational sixth form. The school has achieved specialisms in both science and languages, attracting additional funding to expand these programmes further. The quality of teaching at Mayfield Grammar School is very high and as testament the latest Ofsted reports ranked the school as ‘Outstanding’ in all categories with inspectors commenting: ‘Staff and school leaders share the headteacher’s uncompromising vision for the school that promotes the learning and progress of every student within a caring and cohesive community.’ Beyond raw academics the school also has expansive extracurricular programmes and encourages students to pursue their interests with a variety of clubs and fixtures including sports, arts, subject enrichment, debate, languages and involvement in the Duke of Edinburgh award.

Children in attendance as Mayfield Grammar School perform strongly in their English and Maths GCSE’s with 88% of pupils achieving grades 5 or above versus the national average of 43%. Students also perform well in a wide range of subjects as can be evidenced by an Attainment 8 score of 65.8 versus the national average 46.7. This measure describes how well students have performed in up to 8 of their GCSE’s within different defined categories, and is often a better metric of overall student progress. Perhaps most telling however is the schools Progress 8 score of 0.43. This score range from +1 to -1 and is a comparison between schools of how much progress students entering with similar Key stage 2 results have made by the time they reach key stage 4. A positive score meaning that attendance at Mayfield Grammar, versus other schools nationally, raises the potential achievement of students across 8 of their subjects by an average of 0.41 of a grade in each subject.

Mayfield Grammar School is somewhat unusual in that admission can be gained not only by passing the Kent Test produced by the GL 11 Plus Exam board for all Kentish grammar Schools, but also by a test made specifically for the School. The Mayfield Procedure is a test designed by a different exam board,  CEM 11 Plus. These two assessments assess children in similar areas, but with notable differences to format. Navigating these differences and deciding whether on not to sit the optional Mayfield procedure in addition to the compulsory Kent Test can be a challenging decision. We at 11 Plus Hero have set up out to provide you will all the information you will need to make that choice, and how to prepare for either test with practise papers and familiarisation materials whatever you decide is right for your child!

Mayfield Grammar School Exam Format

Along with the other grammar schools in Kent applicants to Mayfield Grammar School will need to sit the compulsory Kent Test, produced by the GL 11 Plus exam board. As will be discussed below, there is also the option of taking a school specific assessment – The Mayfield Procedure, produced by the CEM 11 Plus exam board. Passing either test is sufficient to be eligible for a place at Mayfield Grammar however the score in the Kent test does play a part in determining priority of admission as will be discussed below in the section Additional Eligibilities.

The GL 11 Plus Kent Test

The Kent Test is composed of multiple choice papers assessing children’s development towards key stage 2 targets in English and maths alongside their cognitive abilities in verbal and non-verbal reasoning. In addition to these exam board papers the school sets a creative writing exercise. More detail can be found in our centralised article: ‘Selective Tests in Kent – The Kent Test’. So that we provide consistent advice to all children applying for grammar schools places in Kent.

The GL 11 Plus exam board provide two multiple choice papers covering four areas. In addition the school sets its own creative writing exercise. This final element is only taken into consideration at the appeal stage following an unsuccessful Kent Test result.

Paper One

A multiple choice English and Maths paper written by GL 11 Plus and lasting 1 hour

Paper Two

A multiple choice Verbal Reasoning and Non-verbal reasoning paper written by GL 11 Plus and lasting 1 hour

Additional

A creative writing exercise written by the school and lasting 40 minutes

The CEM 11 Plus Mayfield Procedure

The Mayfield Procedure or Mayfield Test is an additional and optional selective entrance test secific to Mayfield Grammar School. Success in the Mayfield Procedure will afford girls an entrance place, even if they did not achieve the passing threshold in the Kent Test. With a greater focus on English skills than the Kent Test, some girls may perform stronger in the Mayfield Procedure.

The Mayfield Procedure is composed of two parts. The first being a computer based multiple choice test set by the CEM 11 Plus exam board and assessing areas common to the Kent Test including: Verbal Reasoning, Non-Verbal Reasoning and the Key Stage 2 Maths curriculum. The second element is set by Mayfield Grammar School itself and in a written English paper. Applicants will read a passage of text and then choose from a provided list of titles to respond to the text, displaying the quality of their written English.

Part One

A computerised multiple choice paper assessing Verbal Reasoning, Non-Verbal reasoning and Maths. Set by the CEM 11 Plus exam board.

Part Two

An English test assessing creative writing. Set and marked by Mayfield Grammar School.

Pass Mark

The GL 11 Plus Kent Test: Pass Criteria

Selective tests do not operate a standard score or percentage of marks that will always determine a successful assessment. Rather they are intended to rank prospective students, with the expectation that the top 25% of children nationally would receive the distinction of ‘Grammar’. As such the mark required to pass changes every year. Further details, and example thresholds from previous years, can be found in out centralised article ‘Selective Tests in Kent – The Kent Test’.

Pass Criteria: The Mayfield Procedure

There is no published threshold mark to pass for these tests; rather the results are standardised and used to compare students within a year group to select the students most likely to benefit from a grammar school education. That said Mayfield Grammar School do publish the weightings for each of the categories in the CEM multiple choice paper, which favours Verbal reasoning. The aggregate score is calculated as:

  • 50% of the Verbal Reasoning score
  • 25% of the Non-verbal Reasoning score
  • 25% of the Mathematics score

The two elements of the Mayfield Procedure (CEM multiple choice test and the Schools written test) are marked separately and a minimum acceptable standard is expected of both separately. As such one cannot compensate for the other.

Mayfield Grammar School FAQs

The threshold to be successful in either the Kent Test or the Mayfield Procedure is not a constant score or a percentage of marks which remains the same every year. In both assessments the raw scores are standardised, age adjusted and aggregated to give an overall score used to compare children in the year group. From these aggregates children are effectively ranked with the top performing children gaining eligibility for admission to Grammar schools. For more information see the Mayfield Grammar School Exam Format section.

Mayfield Grammar School selects students based on their results in the Kent Test, which is compulsory and shared with all Kentish Grammar schools, as well as the Mayfield procedure, which is optional and specific to the school. Success in either is sufficient to be eligible for admission however the admissions documents not that high marks in the Kent Test can increase a childs likelihood of gaining admittance. For more information see the Mayfield Grammar School Exam Format section.

The Mayfield Procedure is an optional extra assessment. It is set by CEM 11 Plus, a different exam board to the Kent Test which is GL 11 Plus. It also has a much higher focus on English and Verbal ability which may better match up with a particular applicant’s skill-set. This essentially provides a child another chance of gaining admission, but this benefit must be weighted against overstressing you child.

  • Familiarisation materials are hosted by Kent County Council for the Kent Test which can be found in the Application Documents section. They are also sold by GL 11 Plus.
  • CEM provide a short familiarisation guide for the format of the CEM computerised which can be found in the the Application Documents section.
