Introduction

Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School is a coeducational selective with Academy status in Faversham, Kent. The school holds specialisms in Mathematics, computing and Modern Languages, which attracts additional funding to expand its programmes. Upon most recent inspection by Ofsted the school was given a rating of ‘Outstanding’ in all categories with examiners commenting ‘Students excel in their personal development and academic study; all achieve very well.’ School houses are a core feature of life at Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School with numerous inter-house competitions feeding into an overall contest for the annual House Cup award. Students are encouraged to pursue their interest with a  variety of extracurricular activities such as clubs for sports, chess, arts, gardening, music and book club. 

Children in attendance of Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School achieve a high standard of GCSE results in a range of subjects as is evidenced by The Schools Attainment 8 score of 61.5 versus the national average of 46.7. Attainment 8 is a measure of how well children performed in up to 8 of their GCSE in set categories including English, Maths, three english baccalaureate subjects (including science, humanities and languages) and three other subjects. Queen Elizabeth's Grammar School Exam Format 

To gain eligibility of admittance for Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School students must pass the Kent Test, which is provided by the GL 11 Plus exam board. The Kent Test assesses your child’s progress towards targets of the Key Stage 2 Curriculum as well as their capacity for Verbal reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning in a series of multiple choice exams. There is also a creative writing exercise which is taken into account at the appeals stage if applicants do not achieve a threshold mark on the multiple choice elements.

Paper One

A multiple choice English and Maths paper written by GL 11 Plus and lasting 1 hour.

Paper Two

A multiple choice Verbal Reasoning and Non-verbal reasoning paper written by GL 11 Plus and lasting 1 hour.

The GL 11 Plus Kent Test: Pass Criteria

The marks from papers one and two are standardised, age adjusted (so as not to favour older children) and combined into an aggregate score. This aggregate score is a comparative measure of all children taking the Kent test and standardised based on the scores within a year group an the difficulty of the test that year. Children achieving grades above a certain threshold will be granted eligibility for grammar school but the threshold is not a fixed number or percentage of marks abd changes every year. Catchment Area

Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School does not operate a standard catchment area in terms of local parishes or postcode boundaries. Eligible children, having passed the Kent Test, will be admitted to the school based on the proximity of their permanent home residence relative to a fixed point on the premises of Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School according to the National Land and Property Gazetteer (NLPG) address point data.

Additional Eligibility

Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School offers preferential admission status to children from certain backgrounds or with certain health requirements that mean they would especially benefit from admission. It is nonetheless a requirement that applicants have passed the Kent Test. 

  • Children with a  Statement of Special Educational Need or Education, Health and Care Plan which specifically mentions Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School will be admitted. 
  • Any child who either was or is currently in the care of the local authority. 
  • Those children qualifying for pupil premium, eligible if they have received free school meals at any time in the last 6 years. To apply under this clause an admission must be supported by a Supplementary Information Application Form provided by the School, which can be found in the Application Documents section.
  • Applicants who already have a brother or sister in attendance at the school
  • Applicants who already have a parent or legal guardian in the employ of the school where they have either held the post for over two years or have recently been recruited to an area with a noted skill shortage. 
  • Any child with a medical, health, special access or social need (particular those under the Equalities Act 2010) that is not otherwise covered by a Statement of Special Educational Need or Education, Health and Care Plan.

  • There is no set pass mark for the Kent Test or any other Grammar School selective admission entrance exam. The raw marks are standardised, aggregated and used to compare between all students taking the Kent Test that year to select the top ~25% who will gain Grammar School eligibility. For more details see the Pass Mark section.
