Introduction

Tunbridge Wells Girls’ Grammar School is an all girls selective school, established in 1905 in the town of Royal Tunbridge Wells. The school hosts specialisms in English and Music, which attracts government funding to expand on these programmes. At the most recent Ofsted inspection in 2011 Tunbridge Wells Girls’ Grammar School was rated Outstanding by Ofsted. As will be presented, academic achievement at the school is very high, with inspectors sommenting ‘Achievement is impressive, with levels of attainment throughout the school that are high because of the excellent good progress students make.’ More than that though the school succeeds at creating a community spirit in its students as the report continues, ‘Girls have an obvious and well-founded sense of pride in their school and their place in it.’ It part this is down to the numerous ways that students can become involved in school life with numerous extracurricular activities clubs and societies, charitable fundraisers, field trips and school performances, the combined cadet force (CCF) and the Duke of Edinburgh award which 80% of girls participate in.  80% in DoE. There is also the opportunity to develop leadership skills and responsibility in the form of school council which takes representatives from all years and more senior prefect roles supporting the running of the school both academically and in extracurricular pursuits.

Academically Tunbridge Wells Girls’ Grammar School is very strong. According to the limited information available for 2022 GCSE results 74.55% of grades were in the range 7-9, where 7 is equivalent to an A in the previous system. Attainment 8 is a metric of the average grades received by girls at a particular school  in 8 of their best GCSE’s across categories of English, Maths, 3 English Baccalaureate subjects (including science subjects, languages and humanities) and three other subjects. The 2022 attainment 8 score for Tunbridge Wells Girls’ Grammar School was 75.41 which compared to the most recently available national average of 46.7 in 2019 is very impressive. Perhaps most impressive however is the Schools Progress 8 score of 0.97 which places it amongst the highest in the country. Progress 8 is a comparison between schools describing how well students who entered with similar Key stage 2 results have performed by the end of Key stage 4. A score of +1 indicates that girls finish Key stage 4 with results across these 8 subjects one grade higher than would nationally be expected given their starting point.

Pass Mark

The GL 11 Plus Kent Test: Pass Criteria

The passing threshold of the Kent Test changes on a yearly basis as it is decided upon partially by how well the entire cohort of students taking the test performed. As such the threshold pass marks can’t be quoted beforehand. That said, it is expected that the top 25% of students nationally will reach this threshold and be deemed eligible for admission to Grammar schools. Worth noting for Tunbridge Wells Girls’ Grammar School specifically is that approximately 14 of the 145 intake places are so called ‘Governors places’ which will be awarded to Girls living with priority area who achieved the highest marks in the Kent Test and wouldn’t otherwise have received a place. For more information and examples of passing thesholds from previous years please see our centralised article  ‘Selective Tests in Kent – The Kent Test’.
