Introduction
Westcliff High School for Boys is a selective boys school based in Southend. Founded in 1920, Westcliff has a long-standing tradition for rich academic culture and excellence. At its heart, the boys school aims to produce outstanding exam results, meeting this goal every summer on results day. However, the school and its headmaster believe in a broad, life focused education, where boys are taught ‘strong values’ and ‘independence’.
The high exam result attainment is evidenced by the school’s recent sets of GSCE results. Following the 2019 GCSE examinations, 97% of boys at the school achieved at least a grade 5 (or higher) in English and Maths; under the previous GCSE marking criteria, this is equivalent to grades C – A*. This accompanies 99% of all students staying in full-time education or entering into employment as well as a “Progress 8” score at 0.83 (well above average). Progress 8 is an indicator measuring the progression of children’s education from KS2 to GCSE level. Adjoining the High School is their Sixth Form, difficult to get into but progressed to by many students following their GCSEs. In the 2019 academic year, the Sixth Form saw over a 99% pass rate for the students, with over 75% of grades at A*-B.
The results speak for themselves; consequently, Westcliff High School For Boys is an increasingly competitive academy for entry in year 7. It is popular and oversubscribed. The boys’ school selects students based on their performance in the CSSE 11+ Examination. This is the Consortium of Selective Schools in Essex. It is a multiple choice test, made up of two papers. One test in English and one in Mathematics. Each paper is designed to test a candidate beyond their ordinary primary education, with both formatting and question difficulty.
