Introduction

Sutton Grammar School is a selective academy for boys serving Sutton and the surrounding area. It is a thriving, state-funded institution which prides itself on delivering a broad, thorough education to all its students, focusing on both academic success and personal development.

The boys’ school consistently produces outstanding exam results. In the 2019 GCSE examinations 100% of students achieved at least grade 5 in English and Maths (equivalent to a high C under the previous GCSE marking criteria). Pupils at Sutton Grammar School develop significantly from KS2 to KS4; the schools Progress 8 score, provided by government data, indicates that the boys’ development is greater than the local and national averages. Many of the GCSE students choose to further their education at Sutton Grammar Schools adjoining Sixth Form. An institution focusing on ‘personal resilience’, students develop key skills independently, while achieving academic excellence.

Applying to a grammar school is a competitive process and understanding how to prepare for selective testing is difficult. Sutton Grammar School, in conjunction with all 6 grammar schools in the Sutton borough, use an initial selective test, known as the Selective Eligibility Test (SET), to narrow prospective applicants to the school. Following sucess in the SET  applicants to Sutton Grammar School, along with Wallington County Grammar School and Wilson’s School, will be invited to sit a common second test referred to as the Second Stage Entrance Examination to further select prospective students for entry. Our resources at 11 Plus Hero help prepare your child for the SET and Second Stage Entrance Examination, providing them with a toolkit to have the best chance of sucess. We also provide information to help guide you and your child through the admissions process, allowing you both to confidently and effectively apply to your chosen schools.

Sutton Grammar School Entrance Test Format

For Sutton Grammar School, Wallington County Grammar School and Wilson’s School, there are two stages of testing to select students for admission. Firstly students will sit the Selective Eligibility Test (SET), common to all 6 grammar schools under Sutton Borough Council. If a student is successful, they’re invited to take part in ‘Stage Two’ testing. The boys schools all use a common exam to test their candidates referred to as the Second Stage Entrance Examination. Both the SET and the Second Stage Entrance Examination can be daunting for prospective students, especially considering the intensity of taking two selective tests. At 11+ Hero, we understand and are accustomed to the content of the test, its methodology and method of marking. 11 Plus Hero is here to help; we can provide a toolkit to your child, familiarising them with the test format and ensuring they have the best chance to succeed.

The Selective Eligibility Test (SET)

The SET, common to all 6 grammar schools in Sutton, is made up of two papers; a multiple choice Maths paper and a multiple choice English paper. Both papers are set in accordance with KS2 curriculum targets. The English paper features spelling and comprehension exercises. Candidates record their answers on a separate answer sheet by filling in a lozenge-shape for answer A, B, C, D or E or a combination of answers. If candidates change their mind about the answer, they need to rub out as fully as possible the wrong answer and replace it with the new answer. The exam papers take between 40 and 50 minutes each and there is a short break between the two.

Paper 1: Maths

Multiple choice paper expected to last 40 – 50 minutes

Paper 2: English

Multiple choice paper expected to last 40 – 50 minutes.
Spelling – Suggested timing 5 minutes. Comprehension 1 – Suggested timing 25 minutes. Comprehension 2 – Suggested timing 10 minutes. Comprehension 3 Comparison of texts – Suggested timing 10 minutes.

Second Stage Entrance Examination

The boys grammar schools in Sutton; Sutton Grammar School, Wilson’s School and Wallington County Grammar School all use a common second stage test called the Second Stage Entrance Examination. This test will consist of two papers, one English paper lasting 1 hour and one Maths paper lasting 45 minutes. The English paper will be an extended writing excercise assessing childrens skill and imagination in long form written work in terms of criteria from punctuation, vocabulary, spelling, descriptive language, sentence and paragraph structure. Children will be given prompts or titles to respond to. The Maths Paper will feature questions set at Key Stage 2 levels and feature no multiple choice questions, instead requiring candidates to write out their answers.

Paper 1: English

Extended writing task expected to last 1 hour

Paper 2: Maths

Standard KS2 level Maths paper expected to last 45 minutes

Second Stage Entrance Examination Format:

Pass Mark

The Selective Eligibility Test (SET) Pass Criteria:

After sitting the SET in September candidates will receive their results approximately a week later. It is not possible to predict a ‘pass mark’ ahead of time as this is subject to change every year. Each individual school determines its own pass mark in the SET by comparing against all the candidates aggregate scores across both papers for that year group. It is however predicted that 25-30% of candidates will pass the test. Following this ‘Stage One’ of testing, successful candidates will be invited to ‘Stage Two’ testing. Note that due to the schools different criteria it is possible for children to be eligable for second stage testing for one grammar school in Sutton but not another. For more information please see our article ‘Selective Tests in Sutton’

Second Stage Entrance Examination Pass Criteria

As with the SET there is no official consistent pass mark for the Second Stage Entrance Examination. However, a candidate’s score in the Second Stage Entrance Examination will be used in conjunction with their score in the First Stage test in order to rank candidates and offer them places at each of the grammar schools. Results from the SET English, SET Maths, Second Stage English and Second Stage Maths will be combined in a 2:2:3:3 ratio to calculate an overall score for a given candidate. Please note, all schools use the scores on each of the tests differently in order to rank candidates and achieving a certain score in the SET or the Second Stage Entrance Examination does not obligate an offer of admission to grammar school.

Catchment Area

Sutton Grammar School does not operate on a catchment area to prioritise students for admission to the school. Proximity of a student’s address is however used in the oversubscription criteria, listed below.

Additional Eligibility

Where the number of boys meeting the School’s Admission Standard exceed the number of places available, the criteria below is used to make offers to candidates, in descending order of priority, until all 135 places are filled:

  1. Boys who are deemed to be ‘looked after’* or formerly looked after by a local authority. Supporting evidence of the status will be required.
  2.  75 places by rank order of the combined scores in the SET and Sutton Grammar School’s Second Stage Entrance Examination where the home address of the boy is in one of the specified postcodes (SM1-7, KT4, KT17, CR0 4–, CR4).
  3. Up to 60 places (plus any remaining places from criterion 2 if the number of qualified boys in criterion 2 is less than the 75 on offer) by rank order of the combined scores in the SET and Sutton Grammar School’s Second Stage Entrance Examination, where the home address of the boy may be in any postcode.
  4. Proximity of the boy’s home address from the School (where scores are equal).

*A child who is (or has been) in state provided social care.
