Greenshaw High School Exam Format

Eligibility of admission to one of the 60 selective places at Greenshaw High School is achieved by passing the Selective Eligibility Test or SET, which is carried out by all grammar schools under the authority of the London Borough of Sutton. Unlike the other grammars in the area it is not necessary to sit a second test at Greenshaw High School. 11 Plus Hero is here to provide you with all of the information on content and timings of the SET so that your child can come prepared and suffer no nasty surprises on test day.

The Selective Eligibility Test (SET)

The Selective Eligibility Test is composed of two 40-50 minutes long papers which children will need to sit on the same day, with a short break in between. These papers are multiple choice in format and are presented as a question booklet and a separate answer sheet to mark one or more lettered options. Questions are set at the level of the Key Stage 2 curriculum in Maths and English.

The Maths paper features questions posed as either raw numerical equations, which the applicant simply has to solve, or else as a sentence describing a scenario in which case the candidate needs to infer what mathematical process to apply. The English papers contain a short multiple choice spelling test and a series of comprehension exercises requiring applicants to read a passage of text and answer questions requiring interpretation. As standard there will be two sections with questions on a distinct passage of text and a final section requiring candidates to compare between these two passages. Suggested timings are detailed below.

Overview:

  • Paper 1: Maths – Multiple choice paper lasting 40-50 minutes
  • Paper 2: English – Multiple choice paper lasting 40-50 minutes
    • Spelling – Suggested timing 5 minutes
    • Comprehension 1: Suggested timing 25 minutes
    • Comprehension 2: Suggested timing 10 minutes
    • Comprehension 3 Comparison of texts: Suggested timing 10 minutes

Pass Mark

The Selective Eligibility Test Pass Criteria:

The multiple choice answer sheets will be collected, marked by computer and results should be emailed to parents the following week. To pass the test students must achieve a combined score in the Maths and English papers that exceeds a defined threshold. As the score is combined it is possible for a particularly strong Maths paper score to compensate for a weaker English paper score and vice versa. Unfortunately it is not possible to state what the threshold passing score will be ahead of time. This is because the threshold is determined on a yearly basis, partially by analysing the results obtained from that year’s group scores. Each school in Sutton also has the ability to define their own threshold passing score. It is however estimated that the top 25-30% of achieving students will pass the test however. For more information please see our article ‘Selective Tests in Sutton’.

Catchment Area

Greenshaw High School does not operate a catchment area in any sense. Admission places are awarded based on the oversubscription criteria described below. Any ties for eligibility are decided upon by giving priority to the child who occupies permanent residence in the closest proximity to Greenshaw High School according to a computerised system specified by Sutton Council.

Additional Eligibility

Children with an Education Health Care Plan (EHCP) that specifically mentions Greenshaw High School will be automatically admitted. After this students will be offered admission places with the following ranked priority status.

  • Children who either at the point of admission will be or who have previously been in the care of the local authority will be given priority of admission.
  • Children who have a medical or social requiremnt meaning that admission to Greenshaw High School would be especially beneficial to their well being will be admitted. Applications made under this consideration need to be supported by evidence  from a qualified medical or otherwise practitioner.
  • Those children who have a member of staff as a parent where the parent has either worked at the school for over 2 years or was more recently hired in an area of demonstrable skill shortage.
  • Up to 60 places will be awarded to those children who have sat and passed the Selective Eligibility Test (SET) with priority over the main cohort. Please note however that passing does not automatically mean a place will be awarded as more children pass the test that there are places.
  • Those children who have a sibling in attendance at the school will be granted priority.
  • Remaining places will be granted based on proximity of a child’s permanent location of residence to Greenshaw High School.
