Introduction

Wallington County Grammar School is a selective, single gender, academy serving Wallington and the surrounding area. It prides itself on producing academically successful students with “effectiveness of leadership and management” throughout all staff members.

The boys’ school consistently performs highly across all exams. Following the 2019 examinations, 99% of all boys at the school attained at least a grade 5 in both English and Maths (equivalent to a high C under the previous GCSE marking criteria). This statistic is significant compared to the local authority and national average, with statistics in both of these at 64% and 43%. Further, the ‘Progress 8’ score at the school is well above average. This means that students develop significantly at Wallington County Grammar compared to students at other secondary schools in the country.

Admission to grammar schools is always competitive and the process for admission to Wallington County Grammar is vigorous. Wallington County Grammar School, in conjunction with all 6 grammar schools in the Sutton borough, use an initial selective test, known as the Selective Eligibility Test (SET), to narrow prospective students at the school. Next, Wallington County Grammar School, along with Sutton Grammar School and Wilson’s School, use a common second test to further narrow prospective students for entry. Our resources with 11 Plus Hero help prepare your child for the SET and secondary test, providing them with a toolkit to have the best chance to succeed. We also provide information to help guide yourself and your child through the admissions process, so that you and your child can confidently and competently apply to your chosen schools.

Wallington County Grammar School Entrance Test Format

Wallington County Grammar School, with all 3 boys’ grammar schools under Sutton borough council, test students for admission using both a First Stage and a Second Stage. First, all students sit the Selective Eligibility Test (SET), common to all 6 grammar schools under Sutton Borough Council. If a student is successful, they’re invited to take part in ‘Stage Two’ of testing. The boys schools all use a common exam to test their candidates. Both the SET and the Stage Two test are daunting for prospective students, especially considering the intensity of taking two selective tests. At 11+ Hero, we understand and are accustomed to the content of the test, its methodology and method of marking. The 11 Plus Hero is here to help; we can provide a toolkit to your child, familiarising them with the test format and ensuring they have the best chance to succeed.

The Selective Eligibility Test (SET):

The SET, common to all 6 grammar schools in Sutton, is made up of two papers; a multiple choice Maths paper and a multiple choice English paper. Candidates record their answers on a separate answer sheet by filling in a lozenge-shape for answer A, B, C, D or E or a combination of answers. If candidates change their mind about the answer, they need to rub out as fully as possible the wrong answer and replace it with the new answer. The exam papers take between 40 and 50 minutes each and there is a rest and toilet break between the two.

Pass Mark

The Selective Eligibility Test: Pass Criteria:

After the SET test in September, results are received approximately a week after sitting the test. It is not possible to predict a ‘pass mark’, as these are subject to change every year. Each individual school may determine its own pass mark, usually by comparing against all the candidates aggregate scores. It is predicted that 25-30% of candidates will pass the test. Following this ‘Stage One’ of testing, successful candidates will be invited to ‘Stage Two’ of testing. For more information please see our article ‘Selective Tests in Sutton’.

Boys’ Schools ‘Stage 2 Test’ Format Pass Criteria:

There are no official pass marks for the Second Stage examination. However, a candidate’s score in the Second Stage test will be used in conjunction with their score in the First Stage test in order to rank candidates and offer them places at each of the grammar schools. Wallington County Grammar School produces an overall aggregate score of both papers in both exams, using the ratio 2:2:3:3, with the papers in the first stage of testing at ‘2’ ratio, and the papers in the second stage of testing at the 3 ratio. Please note, all schools use the scores on each of the tests differently in order to rank candidates and achieving a certain score in the SET or the Second Stage test does not obligate an offer of admission to grammar school.
