Introduction

Wallington High School for Girls is a selective grammar holding academy status in the London Borough of Sutton. The school holds specialist status in both Engineering and Languages, which provides them with additional governmental funding for the provision of these subjects. The school encourages a sense of community and responsibility in its girls with plenty of opportunity to become involved in inter-house competitions and to contribute to the school council which is run by the Head girl and senior prefect team, with all years represented. Through these systems the girls arrange a variety of charitable and community focused activities. Beyond academics there are plenty of extracurricular activities for students to develop their interests and build character, with clubs dedicated to music, drama, arts, sports as well as the Combined Cadet Force and Duke of Edinburgh Award schemes.

In terms of academic achievement the school is incredibly strong, as can be seen in the most recently reported data from 2019. Attainment 8 and Progress 8 are scores given to schools based on how well children attending perform in up to 8 of their best GCSE’s from ‘bins’ of subjects including English, Maths, 3 English Baccalaureate subjects (including Sciences, history, geography and languages), and any three further approved subjects. Attainment 8 is a measure of the average GCSE point score of a pupil in attendance at a school. Wallington High School for Girls has an Attainment 8 of 79.4 compared to the regional and national averages of 58.6 and 46.7 respectively. Progress 8 compares children who received similar Key Stage 2 results and asks how much progress they made by the end of Key Stage 4 (GCSE level) depending on which school they attended. Wallington High School for Girls has a Progress 8 score of 1.07 meaning that on average pupils receive a grade higher than the national expected GCSE result for girls with similar, already very strong, starting points.

Wallington High School for Girls Exam Format

Wallington High School for Girls operates a two stage process for deciding if girls would be well suited to the intensive grammar school curriculum offered. Alongside the other Grammar schools under the authority of Sutton Council the first stage testing is known as the Selective Eligibility Test or SET. Passing this test essentially acts as a panning phase as only the successful girls will be invited back for second stage testing. The second stage test is shared by Wallington High School for Girls and the other girls grammar school in Sutton, Nonsuch High School for Girls. Hence why it is called the Nonsuch and Wallington Second Stage Entrance Examination (NWSSEE). Passing this test at either location will confer eligibility of admission to either school if named on the council’s school application form. 11 Plus Hero can help you understand the contents and timings of both tests, providing practice papers materials to help your daughter prepare to take her first step towards a grammar school education!

The Selective Eligibility Test (SET)

The SET is made up of two separate papers in English and Maths taken on the same day with a rest inbetween. Questions are set at the level of the Key Stage 2 curriculum and are in a multiple choice format with answers recorded on a separate sheet to the question papers. The tests should each take between 40 to 50 minutes with some inter-year variation.

The Maths paper will feature questions presented as both numerical equations or in written text format and ask students to mark one or more multiple choice options. The English Paper will feature 4 sections each of which have suggested timings printed on the question paper. There will be one section in Spelling suggested to last 5 minutes and three in Comprehension. The first two comprehension sections ask the candidate to read a short passage of text and answer multiple choice questions choosing one or more answer. The final comprehension section asks the applicant to compare between the two passages to find their answers.

Nonsuch and Wallington Second Stage Entrance Examination (NWSSEE)

Wallington High School for Girls and Nonsuch High School for Girls share their second stage examination which is the Nonsuch and Wallington Second Stage Entrance Examination (NWSSEE). The NWSSEE is composed of two tests, one in English the other in Maths. Neither of these tests will feature multiple choice style questions nor are the lengths of the papers published.

The Maths paper will feature questions presented in written text format, rather than purely numerical equations, which will require applicants to first interpret questions using their mathematical knowledge before being able to tackle the question. The NWSSEE English test is in the form of a continuous piece of writing. Applicant will be provided series of titles from which to write about and are encouraged to display the quality of their writing in terms of sentence structure, use of paragraphs, punctuation, vocabulary, spelling and descriptive language. Both tests are set at teh level of the KS2 curriculum.

Pass Mark

The Selective Eligibility Test (SET) Pass Criteria:

Results of the SET will be emailed to parents a week after the test has been sat. This will detail whether your child has succeeded and is eligible to sit the Second Stage Test. It is unfortunately not possible to quote a passing number or percentage of marks for the SET as the threshold is determined based on the results achieved by the entire year group taking the test that year. Each school has autonomy to determine their own threshold passing score for the SET. It is however expected that the top 25-30% of applicants will pass the test. For more information please see our article ‘Selective Tests in Sutton’

Nonsuch and Wallington Second Stage Entrance Examination (NWSSEE) Pass Criteria:

Candidates must pass both the English and Maths papers in the NWSSEE to be deemed eligible for admission, a high mark in one paper cannot compensate for an unsatisfactory mark in the other. To calculate an applicant’s total score in the combined Entrance Test the marks from each paper of the NWSSEE and half the marks from each paper in the SET are combined to one aggregate score. These will be collected for the year group and used to generate a ranked list of all applicants. Wallington High School for Girls operates superselective admissions meaning that places are awarded depending on how well a child has performed in the combined Entrance Test. The exact parameters of this are best described in the tiered oversubscription criteria described below.

Catchment Area

Wallington High School for Girls does operate a priority catchment area which comes into play in certain aspects of the Oversubscription Criteria described below. To be considered living in the catchment area a child must occupy permanent residence within a 6.7 km radius of the main entrance at Wallington High School for Girls. This distance is measured and verified by the London Borough of Sutton using a Geographical Information System computer program. Any ties for admission will be settled by awarding priority to the Girl whose permanent residence is in closest proximity to the school. Failing this the place will be awarded through random selection.

Additional Eligibility

To be eligible for admission to Wallington High School for Girls it is a requirement of all applicants, regardless of other considerations, that they have passed the Entrance Test procedure which comprises both the SET and NWSSEE. Following this admission is awarded to girls based on a tiered priority basis as is described here. Those Girls with an  Education and Health Care Plan which specifically mentions Wallington High School for Girls will automatically be admitted to the School, provided that they have passed the minimum requirements of the Entrance Test procedure.

  1. Girls who are currently or previously were in the care of the local authority. These girls must meet the minimum qualifying threshold in the combined Entrance Test or else have scored up to 10% lower in the SET and the minimum standardised pass mark in the NWSSEE maths and English papers.
  2. 100 Places will be awarded to the Girls who achieved the highest scores in the combined Entrance Test, regardless of their proximity to the school or to the catchment area.
  3. Up to 35 places are reserved for girls in receipt of pupil premium. Girls are eligible if at any time in the last six years they have been in receipt of free school meals. These girls must meet the minimum qualifying threshold in the combined Entrance Test or else have scored up to 10% lower in the SET and the minimum standardised pass mark in the NWSSEE maths and English papers.
  4. Up to 110 places are designated to those girls who live within the priority catchment area described above, with priority given to the girls who scored the highest in the combined Entrance Test.
  5. Any remaining places up to the 210 PAN will be offered to applicants outside the priority area

Wallington High School for Girls FAQs

The passing threshold for both the SET and the second stage test, the NWSSEE, change every year as they are decided upon partially be analysing the result obtained from every student that year. As such it is not possible to accurately predict the threshold. For further details and to see how your daughters score will be calculated please see section ‘Pass Mark and catchment area’. LINK

As for all grammar schools in Sutton girls must sit the Selective Eligibility Test or SET initially. At Wallington High School for Girls passing their test means girls qualify for a second round of testing in the Nonsuch and Wallington Second Stage Entrance Examination (NWSSEE) which is a shared test between the two girls schools. For more details of the exact contents please see the detailed guide above  ‘Section 4: Wallington High School for Girls Exam Format’ LINK

Wallington High School for Girls claims to receive around 2000 applications for its 210 PAN places. The first test, the SET, is a multiple choice format test which can be rapidly marked by computer to identify those students most likely to be a good fit for an intensive grammar school education. It essentially functions as a panning test before inviting a smaller cohort to take the school specific NWSSEE which is marked by professional teaching staff, costing both time and resources but allowing Wallington High School for Girls to select girls they think would be a good fit for the school.
