Introduction

Torquay Boys’ Grammar School is a single gender, selective grammar school serving Devon. The school prides itself on being successful academically and providing a broad education for students, setting them a good foundation to continue their academic career and enter the workforce. Ofsted, on their last inspection, noted the school has a “drive for academic achievement”, which “is balanced by a deep commitment to students’ wider personal and social development”.

In regards to academic achievement, the boys’ consistently perform well at GCSE level. In the 2019 academic year, 93% of all students achieved at least a grade 5 in English and Maths, leading the school to have an ‘above average’ Progress 8 Score”. This is vast, compared to a local authority average of 26% of students achieving at least a grade 5. Further, government data indicates that 99% of all students in that cohort continued into further education, or entered into full-time employment.

Due to the high academic output of results, Torquay Boys Grammar School is competitive for entry. The boys’ school selects students based on their performance in the Torbay Council 11+ test. A recent change sees this examination now provided and marked by the GL exam board. It assesses a student’s competency in English and Maths at the level of the Key Stage 2 National Curriculum, with some material pushing further. Our resources with 11 Plus Hero help prepare your child for this GL 11+, providing them with a toolkit to have the best chance to succeed. We also provide information to help guide yourself and your child through the admissions process, so that you and your child can confidently and competently apply to Torquay Boys’ Grammar School.

Torquay Boys’ Grammar School 11+ Exam Format

Following the recent withdrawal of the CEM exam board the Grammar Schools in Torbay, who operate a shared admissions test, are in the process of changing to providing the GL Assessment. All four schools, namely Torquay Boys’ Grammar School, Torquay Girls’ Grammar School, Churston Ferrers Grammar and the bi-lateral Spires College will adopt the new exam.

11+ tests can seem unfamiliar to students sitting it and revision for such can be a daunting process. At 11+ Hero, we are accustomed to GL 11 Plus Entrance Examinations as well as the 11+ application and admissions process. For this reason, we provide a specialist set of tools to help your child do the best they can to succeed.

Torquay Boys’ Grammar School GL 11+: Overview

The test will be composed of two multiple choice style papers, one in English and one in mathematics, both of which will be sat on the same day with a short break in between. Specific details of the test are not yet available from the school as they are in consultation. Given the knowledge and experience 11 Plus Hero has concerning GL 11 Plus assessment across the UK it is safe to assume that each test will last 50-60 minutes and that the content of the exams will be based at the level of the Key Stage 2 National Curriculum. As is often the case for GL exams, some questions will likely go beyond the curriculum intentionally to highlight those children who can apply their knowledge to new situations.

Paper One

  • A multiple choice English test
  • Expected to last for 50-60 minutes

Paper Two

  • A multiple choice Maths test
  • Expected to last for 50-60 minutes

Catchment Area

There is no catchment area for admission to Torquay Boys’ Grammar School. Only where there is a tie break in the admissions process, will distance be used to prioritise a student for admission. This is the distance measured from the main school entrance to their home address on a straight line basis.

Additional Eligibility

Children are ranked based on their standardised score in the 11+ test. Where scores are equal between students, the oversubscription criteria listed below will be used to determine the rank of those students. Category 1 is of highest priority, followed by 2 and 3.

  1. A ‘Looked After Child’ or ‘Previously Looked After Child’;
  2. Children Eligible for the Pupil Premium;
  3. Other Children.

Tie Break:

Where two or more children achieve the same total score and cannot be distinguished using the oversubscription criteria, the following tie breaker will be used to prioritise applications:

  1. Straight-line distance from home to the school (the child residing within the closest distance will be prioritised);
  2. Where distances are equal (within a metre) an electronic list randomiser will be used.

Please note, the admissions policy and its criteria is long and complex. To understand the policy in further detail, the category your child falls into or clarify peculiarities of your application or situation, please visit the policy via https://www.tbgs.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/2023-Torquay-Boys-Grammar-School-admissions-policy.pdf
