Introduction
St Anselm’s College is a selective Roman Catholic academy for boys in Birkenhead, Wirral. At St. Anselm’s they plan on educating students in every aspect, to further this they provide opportunities in sport, music, the arts, technology and leadership development, up until and including in the 6th Form. An Ofsted report in 2019 found that St Anselm’s College was “Good” in every major category that they tested. This was an improvement from 2016 where St Anselm’s College was found to “Require Improvement”. According to the 2019 Ofsted inspection, the management is the highlight of the school, with good leadership. The teaching is good, with students motivated and proud of their work, with particularly good teaching in English, Art, and PE. Students have good attendance.
In 2019 St Anselm’s College scored a Progress 8 score of -0.05 which is a very average score, showing that the progress that pupils make is on par with most schools in English. 75% of pupils scored a 5+ in English and Maths at GCSE, which is up from the 43% that is the local average. The Attainment 8 score was 60.5, over 13 points higher than the national average.

St Anselm’s College Exam Format
St Anselm’s College uses GL tests for its entry exam. St Anselm’s College does not use the Wirral Admission Test.
The St Anselm’s College Entry Exam: Overview
St Anselm’s College’s entry exam consists of 3 GL tests. The maths test will take 45 minutes and uses a standard format. The english test will take 45 minutes and includes comprehension, and also contains questions with open answers. There will be a 15 minute break between each test.

Applicants who achieve the pass mark will be with the following order of priority.
- Catholic Looked After and previously Looked After Boys, Baptised Catholic Boys, living in the catchment area.
- Baptised Christian, non-Catholic Looked After and previously Looked After Boys, Baptised Christian, non-Catholic boys, living in the catchment area.
- Looked After Boys and previously Looked After Boys who are not baptised Christians, Non-Catholic boys whose parents wish them to have a Catholic education
Within each category, boys eligible for Free School Meals will have greater priority.
Evidence of Baptism will be required.

St Anselm’s College does not use a pass mark, instead admitting applicants based on rank order of mark.
If your child cannot attend, please inform St Anselm’s College on the morning of the entrance exam on 0151 652 1408, please state the reason for absence. A doctor’s note or evidence will need to be provided to confirm this reason. Arrangements can then be made to sit the exam on a different date.
A pen and pencil are required for the exam, and a snack and drink will be required for the morning break.
